Washington (AFP) - US President Donald Trump's administration has unveiled a sweeping new immigration plan to Congress that offers 1.8 million young unauthorized immigrants known as "Dreamers" a path to citizenship over 10-12 years.

In a comprehensive reform that will be formally presented next week, Trump also asked Congress Thursday to eliminate the popular "green card lottery" program and severely restrict family immigration, steps analysts say could cut in half the more than one million foreign-born people moving to the country annually.

It’s worth it if he builds the wall. If the wall isn’t built then Trump is just another liar wanting to be elected to office.

The reality is that if/when Democrats gain power, they’re going to do much worse. Eliminating chain migration and the diversity lottery is the kind of structural reform Reagan didn’t get. And if we get enough money for the wall, that’s probably the best overall deal we can get.

I believe Shumer said that negotiating with trump was like negotiating with jello.

i.e. it will be fun to see what Trump REALLY is going for here. :)

Several threads about this yesterday.

I hear the democrats already rejected it saying they didn’t like the significant reduction in legal immigration.

Of course, the counter to your "pearl clutcher" crap is to point out that your side of the argument consists of robotic Yes-men and trained seals who agree to anything and everything Trump says even when it runs counter to the issues he got elected on. If I wanted a path to citizenship for nearly 2 million illegals, I would have voted for Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio.

Stopping the chain migration sis the big plus. The DACA numbers are nothing compared to the chain.

People still don't get it....Immigration is a legislation matter. Yes the President can veto...but even that can be overcome.

I have no problem with it as long as they have identified those rude nasty protesters and make sure they are not included. That is not the kind of people we want here. Toss them out and I’ll have no problem with the others as long as they produce and do not EVER go on the welfare roles.

Most of the illegal immigrants in this country now came in legally, and overstayed their visas. The Wall, even a perfect wall, would stop less than half the illegal immigration. It’s a good thing, but not nearly the only thing, necessary.

E-Verify would be a much better win, in fact — but it’s not even in the proposal.

Not really, because you know as well as I do if these 2 million illegals get legal status, it won't end with them. No judge is going to deport their madres and padres or their hermanos and hermanas.

The definition of qualifying under this program will be the devil in the details. Remember using a fake Social Security number is a felony and that alone will preclude many from qualifying.

I don’t mind it as long as it’s 10 or 12 years and they’ve kept their noses clean during that period. Want to sell drugs while taking public assistance and claiming hardship to get into college? Back to Guatemala with you. I think about 50% will make it as about half of the population will listen to democrats in their neighborhoods and think their skin color is a free ride to break the law with impunity. If ICE is administering enforcement then a liberal judge will NOT be able to save them. Any conviction equals deportation. Period.

I’m torn on this. If we did nothing but approve DACA, it would just be a matter of time before the DACA people got a path to citizenship. You were never going to hold the line at a separate path for what are the most sympathetic group in the illegal bunch.

SO, if we were just acknowledging that, throwing it in the mix now would be a great move, like ‘Look, I even went farther than they asked on this, so what’s their problem’ — we’d be giving away something we were going to lose eventually anyway.

Every Dem ‘contributor’ on TV was foaming at the mouth yesterday clear message that they are not interested in a deal. THEY WANT THE ISSUE.

That smirk on that hag Leslie Marshal’s face when confronted with that fact said it all.

As bad as it is (although if we got a real wall within 2 years worth it) 1.8 million is now the new starting point.

Deal with the flood, those who currently reside here, plug the hole (wall).
This is an impossible mess left for the POTUS to clean up. Ted Cruz is criticizing the plan, the ineptitude of the politicians in ‘selective’ enforcement of law, has left us with a no win situation.

The rule of law must be reestablished, hopefully the proposal by the POTUS will be considered as a strong starting point.

It is the responsibility of the federal government to secure the borders. Strong immigration enforcement is a must, the fact that is has been politicized to the point of creating a dangerous and lawless society, makes it even more imperative to get the wall and move forward.

"Dreamers" a path to citizenship over 10-12 years.

Crimeless during that time... and NOT on welfare or 'disability'... and THEN they'll become voting citizens? I suspect the people who make it to the ten year mark will be overwhelmingly Republican... Welcome, welcome.
