When I was younger I took my now-wife up to the mountains to go snowshoeing.
We went to a place called Ice House Reservoir.
We got caught on the far side of the lake as the sun went down, and decided to try to cross. It was scary.
The ice had cracked and refroze several times, and although the ice itself was opaque, the cracks had frozen crystal clear and it was possible to see down into the cracks, and assess the thickness.
It was about a foot thick but still, super scary.
I would never do anything like that ever again, even if it meant returning to my car late, and in the dark.
Here in S.E. Michigan there’s always ice fishermen who push the limit on new ice on Lake St. Clair. And like clockwork, several snowmobilers went thru the ice past weekend.....
heh heh
In Minnesota, you’ve got 30 days to get it out. Major charges for not doing so, and even the EPA can fine you.
