Boston suffered historic flooding because 'bomb cyclone' hit (tr)

Boston suffered its worst flooding in 40 years on Thursday when it was walloped by the 'bomb cyclone' winter storm - and there's an interesting reason why.

Benjamin Sipprell, a meteorologist in Boston for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, told the Daily Beast that the flooding was a result of the blizzard hitting at high tide, and the high tide being higher than usual due to Wednesday's supermoon.

A supermoon is a full moon that occurs when the moon is closest to Earth in its orbit. This happens about four to six times a year.

The tides are caused by the moon's orbit, and are at their highest during full moons. Supermoons bring them even higher.

'Normal tides in Boston are between 9 and 10 feet,' Sipprell explained. 'When we get tides, we get some that go up to 12 feet or more. We were forecasting 12.1 feet with this one, but with the surge, it got bumped up to 15 feet.

'It's definitely historic.'

Full title: Boston suffered historic flooding because 'bomb cyclone' hit at a high tide that was exacerbated by a supermoon

Personally I think Elizabeth Warren was doing a rain dance and things went terribly wrong.

Conjuring up a super moon would be right in her wheelhouse.

Also, everyone wants to live and work with an ocean view.

That was NOT the case 100 years ago. People knew they had no defense (and they had no one to bail them out) against flooding and tidal surges. The same is true even in the Great Lakes. The wealthy all lived on higher ground around cities.

What is a bomb cyclone? The North east weather is of no consequence to 90% of this country. Here in the mid West we just went through two weeks of sun zero weather and snow and no mention by the media whatsoever. Dont expect us to care about New York or Boston now because we DON’T!!

“Boston suffered its worst flooding in 40 years”

Which means that at least 40 years ag0, and likely before that, and before that Boston suffered equal or greater flooding. Thus, not out of the “natural” realm of possibilities.

Old newscast of the Ash Wednesday storm of 1962. Great, dramatic news story - just the facts. (With a great voice and music to make it more dramatic).

I just snow blowed around 15 inches out of my large driveway with my new Toro single stage snowblower here in MA.
Man does that little thing have power.
Pretty sweet for 500 bucks, today alone made it worth it.
my last Toro made it 31 years till finally kicking the bucket last year.

Winter Storm Grayson?
I think i’m gonna start naming my poops....or maybe hire a committee to do it....

A REAL scientific reason for the flooding - at least they didn’t blame it on global warming/climate change.

They were flooded because they made the economic descion not to raise their streets and buildings six feet near the waterfront. The damage done by this flooding was minimal compared to the cost of raising streets etc.

Same economic calculations has been made in Portland Maine where some first floor building flood about once a year. People and business consider this a cost of doing business and no one has a office on the first floor.

I have one of those little 16” Toro 2 cycle single stage snow blowers. I use it for sidewalks and cleaning up in front of the garage doors. I have a plow guy for my 150’ long driveway. It is a great little machine. I also have a Honda 4 stroke 20” single stage snow blower. I actually like the Toro better because it is lighter.

I lived in NH, about 15 miles north of Haverhill. I had a Ford F350 4WD with an 8 foot Fisher plow. On a really bad day I would drive it in to work and you could just watch the needle on the gas gauge drop down. It got about 5 miles per gallon.
