FULL TITLE: Bundle up! Life-threatening bitter cold weather takes hold of northern US with record-breaking arctic blast bringing temperatures as low as 37 below zero
Bitter cold weather has taken hold of much of the northern United States and is expected to stay put for days to come into the New Year.
Forecasters warned of hypothermia and frostbite from arctic air settling in over the central U.S. and spreading east.
The National Weather Service reported International Falls, Minnesota, the self-proclaimed Icebox of the Nation, plunged to 37 degrees below zero, breaking the old record of 32 below set in 1924.
Hibbing, Minnesota, bottomed out at 28 below, breaking the old record of 27 below set in 1964.
'Bitterly cold arctic air will settle in across a large swath of the U.S. as we turn the calendar from 2017 to 2018,' said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dan Pydynowski.
'People will really need to bundle up if they are heading out Sunday night for New Year's Eve celebrations in places like Chicago, for example, where the high will be 15 F on Sunday, around 15 degrees below normal.'

Gorebal walming!
Need a kitty and doggie ping please.
In arctic blasts like this people should always bring pets indoors to keep them warm. Their fur coat is not enough unless they are a Siberian Husky or Alaskan Malamute.
All other FReepers check on your neighbors!
Hawk is out in a lot of the country.
We are projected to have an early January freeze and the temperature here is not going to get out of the forties for at least the next couple of weeks. This from sunny Florida.
Protect your pets, pipes, and plants. Pets should always be indoors. Then again, that is how I roll.
Global warming’s fault.
How cold is it here in NE Indiana? I just saw a black lab on the corner, stuck to a fire hydrant.
Global warming!
When do we want it?
NOW!!!
I’ve set-up fish houses frequently in -35 to -42 weather.
No biggie.
Where in FL? My wife is constantly on the Eagle Watch cam site and both Harriet and M15 are panting due to the heat.
An undisputed global cold snap of about 10 years would warm my heart.
Is any American media covering this?
My dog loves this weather.Cant get him to come in.
It’s coming.
And it’ll likely be a lot more than 10 years.
That cold Huh?
I could tell it was going to be a hard winter while up there last fall. By the size of the firewood piles.
Our barn cat died today. Saddle thrombosis. He had a heater and some days a wood fire. We always made sure it was above freezing. He was a Katrina rescue, probably about 14. Sad for Ziggers - black manx great personality.
The “climate scientists” will be consulting pig entrails and then let you know what is coming next. ;-)
Not that cold here in Vermont, but cold enough. It’s minus ten here at noon. I’ve just come in from doing some shoveling along the driveway to make more room for our children and grandchildren to visit, and to prepare for the next snowfall. The sledders and skiers aren’t here right now, but no doubt they’ll show up later.
We just got some more firewood from one of my sons in law, but the heating bill is going up.
Go here and look at a few beached whales instead and remember this is an hour or so ago:
