Meet Sgt. William Carney: The first African-American Medal of Honor recipient
Of the 3,498 service members who have received the Medal of Honor throughout U.S. history, only 88 have been black.
In recognition of African American History Month, we're sharing the stories of the brave men who so gallantly risked and gave their lives for others, even in times when others weren't willing to do the same in return.
We'll start with the first black recipient of the award: Army Sgt. William H. Carney, who earned the honor for protecting one of the United States' greatest symbols during the Civil War -- the American flag.
Carney was born into slavery in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1840. His family was eventually granted freedom and moved to Massachusetts, where Carney was eager to learn and secretly got involved in academics, despite laws and restrictions that banned blacks from learning to read and write.

BLM don’t respect dat!
Three of the great minds of the century.
I sent this article to that b*tch Kaeperdick on his Facebook page. Even when he was shot and dying Sgt. William Carney would not let go of the flag, but this pampered millionaire b*tch Kaeprndick can’t even stand for it.
Honor has no color. To be defined by skin color is shallow at the very least especially in America.
Good for you!
Carney died so that the society which allowed Kaeperdick to say his venom would not cease and continue.
His response? He continues to $hit on America.
F-Him and BLM.
Sgt. Carney was wounded badly at Fort Wagner, but did not die until 1908, age 68. I spent many years researching both the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiments, and was fortunate enough to meet, and become friends with descendants of officers and enlisted men from both units. About 4 years ago I put all the boxes of research material I had in my car, and took them to the the Massachusetts National Guard Museum and Archives in Concord. I didn’t want the stuff to end up in the dumpster after I’m gone.

You are a good man. I have been doing the same with my Fathers WWII items. They are valuable archives worth preserving, rather than ending up in a landfill someplace.
That was a touching story, thank you for posting it.
Wow! That’s amazing!
I could not care less about the color of this extremely brave man’s skin except to note he overcame real discrimination to serve this nation. Bet he’d have some harsh words for the NFL pukes.
I am so fed up of hearing about a persons color. How about just being an American, not this crap of African American which I might add can also be white, or Asian American. no you are either an American , or not.
Thanks for your post!
I’ve watched the movie Glory about a dozen times. After some nominal reading, I’m not so sure how accurate the movie portrays the real soldiers.
There are very few people who even care anymore about these topics or issues - even the descendants of our Civil War heroes.
In the early 1980’s, a doctorate student finally decided to write the first biography of my favorite general, Wesley Merritt. Reading about the process he went through was almost embarrassing at the amount of interest the relatives had on the subject. One of them even gave him his sash and epaulets I believe.
What you did is appreciated by amateur historians like myself. There’s no telling how many treasures lurk in basements/attics around this country.
Thanks!
There should be a film about this man.
Apparently the NFL players don't understand that simple concept. Sgt. Carney would have schooled any or all of them if he had the opportunity.
I do see one true American in the picture.
He’s wearing sun glasses and holding his hat over his heart.
America was doing pretty well in the early 20th Century in terms of being a melting pot with everyone from coast to coast buying into the concept of being an American first.
Millions of legal immigrants from all over the globe came here and integrated, ALL RELIGIONS AND ALL COLORS, and even the freed slaves had nuclear families and were on board too.
Then came the communist domestic enemy in the early 20th century, mostly Jewish but plenty of goyim, remember the Rosenberg’s?
The communist front and their operatives have allied with the globalists to take America down.
This problem doesn’t get resolved via the political process, solve the problem or perish.
I think they mean Black American.
