Apart from incredible hunger or rabies what would cause dogs to do that?

Some dogs have such a high prey drive that they literally lose their minds when it is activated. These dogs were obviously too much for her to handle.

Her mistake was not taking proper assessment of her interests in owning a dog and her capabilities in handling dogs. She paid with her life.

Might have something to do with the dogs being pit bulls.

I read this on another thread and something doesn’t sound right. To start with, those aren’t pit bulls IMO. They look more like Catahoula Leopard Hounds to me. They can be vicious hog and bear dogs but I have never heard of one attacking and killing a person. I had two that were crossed with Rottweiler as hog/bear dogs. We had them as farm protection dogs. They never, ever made any aggressive moves at us but could kill a wild hog, especially working as a team. It makes me wonder if something else attacked her and the dogs attacked it. My dogs would have died protecting me.

BTW, I won’t have Pitts or German Shepard’s. If I thought those were Pitt’s I would say so but they just don’t look like Pitt’s to me.

Incredibly irresponsible breeding would cause a dog to do that, and far too many pitbulls are apparently the result of incredibly irresponsible breeding.

Domesticated dogs are the result of thousands of years of selective breeding for obedience and self-control. Undo all that work by selectively breeding for uncontrolled ferocity in dog fights or securing drug labs, and you have an animal that may love you and may go through most of its life without incident, but can also lash out in a fit of deadly anger at any time.

It’s pack mentality. Alpha dog, Beta dog vs Wannabe female alpha human dog. That and there are still strains of dogs trained for war and have adapted a natural inclination to it.

Perhaps it starts off as rough play, then turns into a mauling. One thing to note: I think most dogs maulings include 2 dogs or more.
