Busy beavers raising concern in Staten Island community

RICHMONDTOWN, Staten Island (WABC) -- In some spots, it looks like vandalism. In others, more like a wood carving exhibit. But there's no doubt, the culprits here in Staten Island are beavers.

Residents say the population is dramatically increasing along this stretch of the Bluebelt, a city owned creek in Richmondtown designed to manage water runoff. There are some big concerns.

"The trees! The trees!" said long-time resident Joe Palladino, who has watched hundreds of trees along the creek near his block, Saint Andrews Road, chewed down by the beavers.

"Once they're finished with these trees, what's next? The trees in front of your house?" he said.

Carlo Salimeni, who lives up the block, is already watching the tree in his front yard slowly dying. "One morning, I woke up and this is what I found," he told Eyewitness News.

If the tree falls, he is concerned about the power lines nearby. Salimeni also says he hears the beavers all night, chewing.

"Rattling, like chopping wood, chopping wood," he sai

It may seem counter-intuitive but they need to put iron maidens
on the trunks of their trees to keep the beavers out.

People think of beavers building dams in some place like Maine or Nova Scotia, not in a borough in New York City.

Old joke in Maine about how you tell the difference between the roads and the streams in the spring of the year - there aren’t any beaver dams on the roads.

Four seasons in Maine - frozen, mud, blackflies and dust.

It’s remarkable that beavers have made a comeback on Staten Island. I wonder where they migrated from. I mean, it isn’t like there’s any nearby wilderness. The New Jersey side of the Arthur kill is oil refineries and power generating stations and other noxious uses.

Now do not trap those critters out ... they are likely threatened and perhaps endangered - best to move all the people out and let the poor furry dears do their thing.

Then there won’t be any Republicans left in NYC.

Through the miracle of modern science the beavers will take up the challenge and vote as a block for conservatives ... so the supply will be replenished!
