All Chuck Norris movies must be played backwards so that the terrorists seem to be winning.
Maybe in another 30-40 years the Saudis will allow their schools to teach that the Earth is round and that gravity isn’t caused by “Djinns.”
“There must have been a booming market in black market DVDs and pirated media”
There is. If you ever visit there don’t go to their theaters ever, even for the curiosity value. Imagine the worst things about a US theater times at least ten.
When “Magnum PI” was first allowed to be aired on TV there, it was so edited that the show only lasted 15 minutes. One scene would have him ready to kiss a woman, then it would cut away to him shooting a gun.
Followed by “The Sound of Muezzin” where Maria Von Trapp is stoned by Islamic clerics for singing at the mosque.
Do you think the people who did the editing were obliged to poke their own eyes out?
I wonder if the popcorn and camel piss at the concession stand will be over-priced.
My parents took me to a Richard Pryor movie in the 70s. He was just doing stand-up — it wasn’t a Gene Wilder-as-partner movie. He was pretty raw.
My mother had seen Pryor on the “Mike Douglas Show” and found him amusing as far as TV goes. I think she found him less entertaining in the movie theater.
“White Collar was so awesome. To see June ( Diahann Carroll ) still being able to sing circles around modern Mcdivas at about 80 years old brought a smile to my face for days. Liked her since I was a kid and first saw her in “Julia” back in the 60s. Only wish she had a bigger part in WC.
The bigger boon to their economy was letting women drive. Now they can get rid of 1-2 million foreign employee drivers and keep that money in the country.
Just in time for really bad movies.
I remember shortly after we got cable they gave us a free trial of HBO. My brothers and our friends were watching a Richard Pryor special. My mom overheard the blue language and went ballistic!
What is "conservative" is context-specific to a nation or a culture. The textbook definition of a "conservative" is not someone who wants free markets and limited constitutional government, but someone who wishes to maintain traditional values and institutions. Those "traditional values and institutions" differ from one society to the other.
By this definition, Saudi Wahhabi clerics are the "conservatives" in their society. That doesn't mean that they have anything in common with what western societies consider conservative, because the institutions and values that we want to conserve have little to nothing in common with those that they wish to conserve.
All three of them.
