Queen Victoria and Prince Albert enjoyed a passionate private life that saw them share nine children. Victoria, portrayed by Jenna Coleman in the ITV drama of the same name, famously refused to obey the conservative standards of the time, even going as far as calling her many pregnancies the 'shadow side' of marriage. But what is little known is the fact the queen and her husband also had a tenth child after adopting a Nigerian princess following the brutal murder of her royal parents. Sarah Forbes Bonetta was just five when she was captured by the merciless King of Dahomey in 1848.

But before she too could be killed, British naval officer Frederick Forbes rescued her while on a mission to end slavery among the Dahomans.

Only Western Civilization has ended slavery in its domains.
As its influence has shrunk, slavery has returned.
How interesting. I’m looking forward to Season 2 of Victoria. So far none of the principal actors have mouthed off against Trump and spoiled it for me.

Cue, The Kinks....
Long ago life was clean
Sex was bad, called obscene
And the rich were so mean
Stately homes for the Lords
Croquet lawns, village greens
Victoria was my queen
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, ‘toria
I was born, lucky me
In a land that I love
Though I am poor, I am free
When I grow I shall fight
For this land I shall die
Let her sun never set
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, ‘toria
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, ‘toria
Land of hope and gloria
Land of my Victoria
Land of hope and gloria
Land of my Victoria
Victoria, ‘toria
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, ‘toria
Canada to India
Australia to Cornwall
Singapore to Hong Kong
From the West to the East
From to the rich to the poor
Victoria loved them all
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, ‘toria
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria
I heard that on the radio this morning on the way to the airport.
No Victorian writer would have said anything so puritanically smarmy as "share nine children."
They knew where babies came from back in the day.
This whole “Victoria female power” thing is new information, and I’m not quite sold on it.
These movies portray a different Victoria than the woman I learned about, and the information it’s based on is pretty new. Just not sure at this point.
Until recently, popular culture tended to concentrate on Victoria’s later years. Less attention has been paid to her youth and her twenty years of marriage.
The Prince Consort was the love of her life. His death at only 42 was a shock she never really recovered from.
Well “share” is more appropriate to modern marriages where two men or two women may acquire a child or two from somewhere.
