I'm not sure about this date, as a similar article just appeared in Daily Mail of 30 Nov 2017.

Dogs really ARE smarter than cats

The researchers, from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, say the number of neurons in an animal's cerebral cortex is a hallmark of intelligence.

The cortex is the largest layer of the brain and is associated with a range of complex behavioural characteristics.

Researchers found that dogs possess around 530 million cortical neurons, while cats only have around 250 million.

By comparison, a human brain houses around 16 billion cortical neurons.

Dogs have owners.

Cats have staff.

Dog: “You feed me, you pamper me, you play with me, you see to all my needs, you love me. You must be God!

Cat: “You feed me, you pamper me, you play with me, you see to all my needs, you love me. I must be God!

Having had 2 terriers, I can say with out any doubt, that sitting on someone’s head is perfectly normal for them. Don’t ask me how I know.

How much government(our) money did they spend to find out that cats are not dogs?

Ranks right up there with the recent study that proved the men and women are different.

Great pic, and with my experience working with the public, I’d say cats and dogs are both smarter than 80% of the human population.

...have tested dogs and cats on the same tasks, using cats that show the same level of interest in food rewards as the dogs.

What do they expect when they started with cats known to be retarded?

The Cat's Diary

Day 983 of My Captivity

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. Bastards!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now ...

Cats are smarter. They can train big hairless monkeys to serve them with blind loyalty.

That’s why I have always had dogs. Dogs are good working partners. Cats are manipulative feline overlords.

This is really like asking - whose smarter: men or women?

It depends on how you define it. Which one scores higher on most IQ tests? - men. Which gets over on the other more often? - definitely women.

Dogs are generally all about pleasing their masters. Cats are generally all about pleasing themselves. But just because dogs perform better at obedience tests doesn’t mean they are smarter. It just means cats don’t give a crap about your obedience tests. So who, then, is smarter?

Funny my son and I were just watching kitty videos, starting with my recalling the cat hero:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEa6jZv-Khc

This video covers 2 talking points in one: that dogs are wonderful (not) and cats don’t care (not). Dogs DO attack, and sometimes cats care enough to do something.

Yeah, I know this has nothing to do with intelligence, but I see the thread is already digressing.

And BTW, brain SIZE has nothing to do with it, else the elephant would be smartest. It’s either relative to body, or the surface area (folds).

I have always known that dogs are smarter and some dogs are a lot smarter than others.

Collies and Shepherds are really smart. Bulldogs not so much.

I’ve long felt and accepted that dogs are smarter.

I just prefer cats.

Now, if I wanted a really smart animal, I’d get a pig.
