‘I thought I was going to die’: Shoppers in terror as off-duty officer kills armed man at Costco
Kansas City Star ^ | November 27, 2017 | By Robert A. Cronkleton

A man who brandished a gun inside a busy Costco Wholesale store Sunday in Lenexa [Kansas] was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer who was there shopping.

Police responded shortly after 11 a.m. to the store. When officers arrived, they found that the shooting was over. An off-duty officer who happened to be in the store shopping had fatally shot the armed man.

Customers and employees fled through the store when the man, shouting and carrying a gun, stood just inside the entrance, said Betty Willits, 82.

“I thought I was going to die,” she said, remembering her frantic struggle to keep up with those fleeing as employees shouted, “Run! Run! Run to the back!”

Police did not say which agency the off-duty officer worked for, but several news reports said he was a Kansas City, Kan., Police Department officer. No one else was injured and police were not looking for anyone else involved in the shooting.

Police are still investigating exactly what the armed man said and did when he entered the store. They did not say what type of firearm he had.

“All I know right now is he brandished the firearm,” Borchers said. “Thankfully, there was an off-duty officer inside the store. And nobody got hurt.

“I don’t know what the subject’s intent was but before anything really bad could happen, he was stopped.”

Lenexa is a suburb of Kansas City. It's amazing what an armed good guy can do. A possible "mass shooting" averted.

So, we don’t know who the attacker was? He has no name? We don’t know what he was shouting?

Costco is a gun free zone. The cop might be in trouble.

Another shooting where, other than being identified as a male, the perp’s description is not given, and no picture of him is available. This article has been sanitized for a reason.

I’d have taken cover in the toilet paper aisle, one of those Costco jumbo packs will stop anything up to a .50 BMG.

Three times in that article it says he was holler something but never says what. Nowhere in the article does it give a description of the man or his name. His family isn't all over the news blaming the policeman. One can only assume he was looking for the snack bar.

As would I.

No interviews with anyone who actually saw the gun or gunman.

One yesterday likely misidentified the weapon, calling it a “.45 revolver”.

Possible, but I doubt a distant and accurate assessment.

Any odds on the off-duty cop having his Costco membership revoked?

Once again a good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun.

Chalk up one more for the good guys.

I can see the Costco from my desk right now.

Lenexa and Overland Park are high scale areas for Kansas City. Or at least they were growing up to a kid from KCK proper like myself.

As the posters here have said, possible mass shooting averted thanks to a good guy with a gun.

I am so thankful.

He may lose his membership. It is in the membership rules but not posted on the entrance door.

Sheesh. What a poorly written article. Did he shoot or just "brandish" the gun. The article is all over the place. No witnesses said they heard gunfire.

If you’re caught with a weapon on private property which prohibits them, the worst they can do is ask you to leave.

No if this had been a school, or other government building... no you’re actually breaking the law, in most states.

They used to be gun free zones, but a couple of years ago they took the sign down in the Tucson Costcos.

One of the reasons for getting a CCL in Arizona, even though it is not really required, is that it allows you to carry concealed in a Gun Free School Zone. The key thing is that your weapon has to stay concealed in the GFSZ.

Haven’t noticed a posted sign at the Tulsa location, guess I need to study the front door really close the next time I go.

Las Vegas PD killed the Navy Seal a few years back who was shopping in Costco with his wife. He bent down to lift something up which exposed his pistol in he was carrying. Some lady freaked out and told the manager, who called the cops.

As he was leaving the store the cops showed up and started yelling commands to him when one of them shot the Seal.

I’ve never heard what came of this. The PD confiscated all the video. The wife claims he was compliant when when the cop shot him.
