The Lenexa, Kansas police department confirmed to KCTV5 today that they are investigating a shooting at a local Costco involving an off-duty police officer and an armed man.

On Sunday afternoon, police received emergency calls that a man was threatening the store, pointing a gun at customers. But, when they arrived on the scene, the man was found dead. An off-duty police officer had shot and killed the suspect. The police did not release the name of the officer nor the deceased man.

Witnesses described the scene.

"You could hear from the front of the store," said one witness. "Was a bunch of people yelling, 'Everybody get down! Everybody get to the back of the store!'"

"We just kind of ran through the neighborhoods to see how far away we could get from the building," she added. "I just really hope and pray that things get better across the country."

Miguel Robles, a Costco employee, said: "I saw a gentleman standing at the door yelling at everybody, looked like a .45 revolver in his hand, yelling, 'Don't close the doors on me!' whatever else. I just turned around and I started clearing people away from the door and pushing people away. I saw kids and told everybody to grab their kids and keep going, keep going, keep going."

Costco employee Ryan Vacca said, "It was this weird moment for me where I could hear and sense a lot of commotion going on, but it wasn't really registering with me. I was just kind of watching it ensue." Vacca said the man was "yelling something about fire marshal and doors; sounded like gibberish."

Bill Payne was shopping with his friend with the incident happened. He said, "I was looking at the TVs and somebody hollered, 'Man coming in with a gun!'" "Ran towards the back and out the side door," he said, "and when I got to the back, I counted 8 shots. It's scary."

The armed off-duty officer stopped a potentially dangerous scene.

"I don't know what his intent was, but before anything really bad could happen, he was stopped," said Lenexa police Captain Wade Borchers.

He wasn't threatening "the store," he was threatening the people who were shopping at "the store."

What is it with these "journalists."

A gun was threatening a store, and somehow a guy ended up dead. How awful.

I like "the situation was resolved."

Thank God for that off-duty officer. This could have turned out much worse.

Cop be doing his job, and off duty no less.

Timothy must be tired.

It seems he was the only one working at Townhall this weekend. Every article yesterday and most all of the articles today were penned by him.

but I had to chuckle when I saw the headline

Armed private citizen stops criminal with gun. What a shocker. Proves we need more law abiding citizens packing a gun.

According to the Democrats, it was more likely he'd shoot himself or a family member than that he's save anyone's life.

'He wasn't threatening "the store,"'

What if he had missed? What if that miss instead hit an endangered shelving?

Don't tell me the store wasn't threatened, mister.

"Thank God for that off-duty officer."

I agree but it would have been better if a legally armed citizen with a NRA Ball Cap terminated this perp.

I would bet they write it this way as to not be used by lawyers as poisoning the minds of potential jurors and judges.

It really makes me sick as well, but I think that is why they do such wording. Less ammo for the defense attorneys to help their case.

“” The armed off-duty officer stopped a potentially dangerous scene. “”

No. The scene was already dangerous. Really bad thought process.
