Famed engineer Marc Isambard Brunel lost a bid to design the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC, 224 years ago. Now, his design has been revealed after being tucked away in a large album in the Brunel family archive for more than 150 years. The drawing is tipped to sell at the auction in London on Wednesday for $19,600 (£15,000).

Knowing Brunel's tendency for cost overruns and delays probably a good choice to reject his design.

His son, Isambard K., was a fascinating figure. Built the “Great Eastern.”

In spite of any “tendency for cost overruns” (and they did happen), the Thames Tunnel was a very important forerunner for tunneling under rivers, pioneering the shield method.

Also built the Great Western Railway. Originally had 7’ ¼” gauge tracks.
