In late 1992, 1,700 scientists from around the world issued a dire warning to humanity. They said humans had pushed Earth's ecosystems to their breaking point and were well on the way to ruining the planet. The letter listed environmental impacts like they were biblical plagues stratospheric ozone depletion, air and water pollution, the collapse of fisheries and loss of soil productivity, deforestation, species loss and catastrophic global climate change caused by the burning of fossil fuels.
If not checked, wrote the scientists, led by particle physicist and Union of Concerned Scientists co-founder Henry Kendall, many of our current practices...

I do not want to keep reading for $1. /s
And humanity still thinks that those so-called “scientists” are #1 while extending a certain finger in their direction!
“They said humans had pushed Earth’s ecosystems to their breaking point and were well on the way to ruining the planet. “
And gee, a lot of this happened in the former Soviet Union and East Bloc and countries that the Kyoto Accord gave all sorts of concessions to (and is still continuing).
I saved a $1 .. so ecology is a respected science ?
“Humanity has failed to make sufficient progress in generally solving these foreseen environmental challenges, and alarmingly, most of them are getting far worse, they write.
This letter, spearheaded by Oregon State University ecologist William Ripple, serves as a second notice, the authors say: Soon it will be too late to shift course away from our failing trajectory. “
Yeah, I noticed we’re all dead now.
“They said humans had pushed Earths ecosystems to their breaking point and were well on the way to ruining the planet. ”
Well, guess I should buy a lot in Bill Gates “Billy World” he’s planning to build near Phoenix. But, I’m guessing I would have to pass a political vetting and perhaps an IQ test. I’m guessing the endeavor will be a very elitist endeavor. Oh well, guess I’ll just live up in the mountains with my red neck friends, lol...
Even the title is wrong. 1700 is not thousands, it is hundreds.
To one significant figure, it would be “thousands.”
;
“Yeah, I noticed were all dead now.”
Not all, I was dead for a while but I’m better now.
The 1700 was for the “first notice”, the wapo story is about the “second notice” which does involve thousands, at least it was put out by an organization that claims several thousand members.
Cockroaches and DemocRATS will survive.
And horseshoe crabs.
Um, yeah.
I always consult particle physicists when it comes to questions of understanding soil biology, wildlife protection, agricultural practices, and so forth.
Just like NASA always employs life scientists to design their rockets and landers. /s
Developed countries have the fewest environmental problems, because they have the means to mitigate and prevent them. Developing countries always have major environmental issues, simply because they cannot afford pollution control. Thus, the answer is not to punish the rich, but to lift as many developing countries into the developed phase in as timely a manner as possible.
I judge people’s commitment to a clean environment by their attempts to understand the issues and propose targeted solutions. If all they can come up with are worn-out socialist schemes, then they aren’t really environmentalists, but socialists trying to cloak their true intent behind noble causes.
The sky is falling! The sky is falling!!
Oops. Just rain. Nevermind.
Excellent post.
I’ll save you the buck. Government paid scientists will be facing an extinction level event in the next 15 years or so. Oh the horror............
We were warned!

The earth’s ecosystem is a lot less fragile than these people want us to believe (see Ice Ages and Sahara Desert before it was a desert), probably for more research money and a cushy job.
