John Hillerman, the actor who made a career out of playing snooty types, including Tom Selleck's fastidious estate caretaker Jonathan Quayle Higgins III on Magnum, P.I., died Thursday. He was 84.
Hillerman, who received four Emmy nominations in consecutive years for portraying Higgins and won in 1987, died at his home in Houston, family spokeswoman Lori De Waal told the Associated Press. She said the cause of death had not been determined.
Hillerman also appeared as Higgins on episodes of Murder, She Wrote and Simon & Simon.

The only thing I ever saw him in was Bogdanovich’s What’s Up Doc. He had a small part but funny as hell.

(sigh) I always wanted then to do a Magnum P.I. reunion show. Too late now.

Lived to a ripe old age. Long enough to see his children, grandchildren, and possibly great grandchildren grow and prosper.

He was a great character actor, turned up in just about everything in the 70s. Paper Moon, The Last Picture Show, Chinatown, and on and on. RIP John Hillerman.

Sad news. RIP. A friend of my family was on the crew of Magnum PI. We visited the set in Hawaii when I was a kid and my mother got a great picture laying on Magnum’s bed. Without Tom Selleck of course. Real family lore there. LOL.

He’s gonna be a chick in the unnecessary reboot, right?
There was a freeper called Robin Masters, I asked him “Are you Higgins?”. He never replied.

It was terrible.
He was eaten to death by the lads.

The lads being the dogs, Zeus and Apollo.

I knew that but for some reason I never saw that film.
Never saw even one episode of Magnum P I either...
To: SMGFan
He also portrayed the character Simon Brimmer on the Ellery Queen TV series.
A really good series that didn't make it.

I watched that again the other week. He had a great role, playing about the only straight man, comedy-wise, in the whole movie.
The door knob was a great subtle touch.
