Hearts of Stone on the Left

"Too long a sacrifice / Can make a stone of the heart," the Irish poet W.B. Yeats wrote, having witnessed the violence of the 1916 Easter Rising and its aftermath. In an America more divided than ever, and with the left more radicalized than ever, there are all too many hearts of stone.

The Washington shooting of Steve Scalise and other Republican lawmakers back in June; the attack on Sen. Rand Paul last week; and now the massacre in Southerland Springs, Texas – all of them appear to have been carried out by persons motivated at least in part by leftist ideology. The baseball field shooter, James Hodgkinson, was a left-wing activist who hatred President Trump and targeted Republicans. The attack on Rand Paul was reportedly carried out by a neighbor who held extremely liberal views and may have attacked Paul because of political differences.

Now there is the Texas shooter, who has been variously reported to have been a leftist and a radical atheist. There is certainly proof that Devin Kelley posted strongly worded comments on atheism. There is proof that he endorsed numerous liberal causes. There is also evidence that Kelley was aligned with "United Against Fascism," a far-left political group. Whether his political views were the primary motive for his actions remains to be seen, but clearly his attack on a conservative white church was not random.

And don’t forget that the Las Vegas shooter and his girlfriend were photographed at an anti-Trump pally in Reno, NV. He was wearing one of those pink hats.

Lately, my motto has been:

My goal is not simply to defeat the left. My goal is to destroy the left.

If the progressive left keeps attacking and/or shooting our party leaders (Scalise, Paul) they may bite off more than they can chew an choke on the swallowing.

This is what “resistance” is to me, in WWII terms. Only we are not the Nazis.

They’d kill us all if they could. They believe their desire to eliminate us from the face of the earth is a virtue.

I know of no such feeling on our side.

I want to defeat them in the arena of ideas. I know that will never be done, though. The best we can hope for is a swinging pendulum, and that we can keep them from shoving the clock to make the pendulum go so far to the left that it smashes everything, the clock and everything around it.

IMO, there are people with poor impulse control (PIC) on both side of the political divide.

These are the ones who act out without thinking of the consequences, and so by definition, are the first to jump into action. Folks with PIC are also folks who can be seen as being outside of the mainstream or of being a little weird.

The reason I bring this up is because the time will come when someone with PIC decides that enough is enough and goes after one of the anointed on the left.

When this happens, the left will latch-on to any of the peculiarities exhibited by the perpetrator and paint with a broad brush to once again push the narrative that all conservatives are the same.

This of course will justify more violence from the left, and the cycle will continue.

That’s never been proven- the photos were nowhere near good enough to make the claim, and there was no other evidence found to back up the idea that the folks in the photos were them.
