All Cardinals fans remember the 2011 NLDS Game 5, the epic pitching matchup of Halladay and his former teammate, Chris Carpenter. It was one for the ages, with the Cards coming out on top on their way to a World Series win.

Halladay was nearly perfect in that game, gave up only one run. But Carpenter was better, with perhaps his best post-season start ever.

Halladay was a great competitor, and a close friend in the off-season to Carpenter. Their on-field rivalry, and off-field friendship was the epitome of sportsmanship.

Prayers for the Halladay family.

I was wondering what he was doing over the Gulf in a single engine plane.

Looking through his twitter account, it seems that he has owned it for less than a month...

“Ballplayers and airplanes apparently don’t mix. Ask Thurman Munson. Or Cory Lidle.”

Or Ken Hubbs (1964 N.L. Rookie of the Year for the Cubs - died in a plane crash that off-season. Worlds worst sophomore slump).

The last conversation I had with my father, he was gushing as he rarely did about his new car. A month later, he died in that new car. The impact caved the roof inward and crushed his skull. Sometimes falling in love with a brand new toy is the last thing you’ll ever do.

RIP Roy...one of the best ever. I wonder of the Hall of Fame will waive the five year requirement like they did with Roberto Clemente?

True. Roberto Clemente comes to mind.

It’s morbid, but you could almost put together an all-plane crash team.

This happened right off our beach and they have a staging area set up across the street from me. There’s a launch ramp right up the street they’re using for recovery. This icon A5 is a very expensive newest thing seaplane. Just a few weekends ago Peter O’Knight airport in Tampa had. 2 day promotion of this thing . They were giving rides and folks were lined up for hours to fly it.

Apparently his baseball contract didn’t allow him to fly small planes. He implied it in the video at the link.

Class guy, I hate to see this.

I remember when he pitched a no-hitter in the playoffs against my favorite team, the Reds. He threw a great game. He also pitched a perfect game too.

RIP, Roy.

The Plane he had is supposed to be very difficult to Stall.

I wonder if he lost power at a very low altitude and had no time to recover?

This plane is marketed as being a fun recreational vehicle, rather than as serious transportation. It is designed to go out for fun flights in good weather, and has very gentle handling characteristics typical of Light Sport Aircraft. It is equipped with Angle of Attack alarms and other equipment to increase safety. By all accounts it is an excellent design.

But fire in the cockpit, if that is what happened, is a serious flight emergency, which almost any pilot, experienced or not, can have a difficult time handling.

The aircraft is equipped with folding wings, and thus the fuel tank is located in the main body of the aircraft, below an behind the cockpit.

This is, apparently, the second crash of this type. The first killed the company’s chief test pilot during the development stage of the project. So this would be the first crash of the type in the production configuration.

I can understand the attraction. It’s a neat little amphibious plane, and people think of how much fun they’ll have rather than the bad stuff. I’ve gotten over my desire to have one (not that I could afford that particular plane).

"Ballplayers and airplanes apparently don’t mix."

Didn't seem to be an issue for Ted Williams.

I’m just south of there for vacation and we saw helicopters which were apparently circling as they kept showing up every few minutes.

We were trying to figure out what was going on.

It all makes sense now because it looked like they were searching for something the way they kept flying the same path.

It always gives me a weird feeling to know when we see something like this.
