The Ted Turner listing shows him down 43,000 acres. That was from selling land near the Drummond Ranch to the Osage Indian Tribe. The sale included the bison Turner kept on the ranch. The place he sold was between Fairfax and Pawhuska. I’m from the area and now live near Tulsa. I’m also an occasional volunteer at the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve which is north of Pawhuska and abuts the Drummond property.
Interesting list...I’d be happy with 10 Acres on a lake.
I believe at one time the Matador Ranch was the largest with well over a million acres. I think what’s left is now owned by the Koch family but not sure.
“I cant watch her. One long smile fest.”
That non-stop, syrupy, sing-song voice she speaks in gets annoying, real fast.
Cannot stand that little girl voice.
The largest ranch in the U.S. is not in Texas or Oklahoma. It is the Lykes Family Ranch in Florida.
Their cowboys have lasso’s but they mainly use whips and dogs.
Pawhuska area.
I love Maine. I love Uncle Henry’s, the coast, the mountains.
It has been sad to see the decline of the mill towns, and the human suffering that ensued when the mills closed. I think of Millinocket, Madison & Old Town. Even the sardine industry is gone. I don’t like to see this kind of change. :)
Interesting article, I live in Tulsa, and used to sing a cappella with the other gal mentioned in the article, Karen Crawford ~ saw her when I went to The Mercantile in Pawhuska recently ~ very cool!
Their land is in Osage County in Northern Oklahoma. Osage county is the largest county in Oklahoma, and includes the Osage Prairie Preserve. The Drummond family includes more than just Ladd and Ree, and they have been prominent in Northern Oklahoma for multiple generations. Ree built the Pioneer Woman Mercantile in the little backwater town of Fairfax and has turned a dying little town into a travelers’ destination. She is quite a businesswoman.
I take it back, I think the Mercantile is in Pawhuska, adjacent to Fairfax.
Been spending quite a bit of time in Oklahoma for work this fall. Love the people, their work ethic and hospitality have been wonderful. It seems very Business Friendly.
Also - if you’re traveling through the state and have the opportunity, the fried chicken at Eischen’s in Okarche and the Coconut Creme Pie at Clanton’s in Vinita are the best I’ve ever had, and 2nd place isn’t even close. Also, Murphy’s Diner/Steakhouse in Bartlesville is a wonderful place to stop for lunch or dinner.
“...adjacent to Fairfax.”
You have an interesting definition of “adjacent” since those towns are separated by about 28 road miles.
Thanks for the information. Have you seen him or heard stories about him?
I’ve never interacted with him or seen him. I’ve driven through the ranch area as it has county roads running through it. Lots of signs about the bison in the area. My dad worked out there years ago when Texaco operated the oil field that runs through the area. That was a long time before Turner owned it.
My Dad had a friend in Bartlesville, OK. We were little kids but I remember his name because he was a character. Wade Skutter.
I’d feel wealthy owing one full acre here in Eastern MA. :-)
.
She has nice products in Wal-Mart.
It must take a long time to mow the lawn.
