Thursday, just two days after a terror suspect killed eight people by driving a truck down a large swath of the bike path in lower Manhattan, city and state Department of Transportation crews began installing concrete and Jersey barriers at 57 spots along the route between 59th Street and the World Trade Center, according to the mayors office.
The barriers are meant to protect pedestrians and cyclists on the greenway from vehicular traffic on the West Side Highway.
Vehicles wont be able to access places they arent supposed to, said Ben Sarle, a spokesman for the mayors office. Theyre extremely heavy and effective.
But at the corner of West 37th Street, crews set down a slab of concrete diagonally in the middle of the bike path.
Stupidest idea I have ever seen. Thousands of bikers go here, said Robert Sinclair, 44, of Clinton Hill. People are going to seriously hit that.
It was unclear if it would be moved in the future. A request for comment from the city DOT was not immediately returned.
The 20-foot-long Jersey barriers put in by the state are particularly dangerous, according to White, because they turn a two-way bike lane into one single lane, effectively putting north and southbound cyclists on a collision course.
The Hudson River Greenway is the busiest pedestrian and bike path in North America -- it is used and beloved by hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers every year, and the city and state's current solutions fail them in spectacular fashion, White added. We need to protect our public spaces without making them uninviting and difficult to use.
Cathy Calhoun, chief of staff for the state DOT, said the barriers are only a short-term fix, put up to quickly to enhance the security around the bike path after Tuesday's attack.

I’m surprised someone didn’t complain that the barriers are not environmentally pleasing.
Oy. Some people can’t be saved from their own arrogance.
Just wait until some drunk millennial trips over the barrier while texting...
Barriers aren’t the solution. There was no need for barriers before the muzzy invasion.
How about placing the barriers where they belong - at the ports of entry to the US?
Placing them along the bike paths simply invites the ISIS vermin to go to Plan B (and then C and D etc. as needed).
Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out.
Actually, it’s a beautiful view along there, and whenever they put barriers up, they spoil it.
Instead of putting up barriers, expel the terrorists. This guy was well known to the authorities, and apparently they just loved having him there.
How stupid. Now they’ll think of another way to attack. You are NOT solving the problem. Deport ALL Muslims. The authorities are beyond ignorant and stupid.
> Barriers arent the solution. <
Frederick the Great would agree with you: He who defends everything, defends nothing.
I thought barriers like walls didn’t work.
Yay- we now have to fortify our cities against terrorists- just like the middle east has to- gee- what progress we’re making
Really? How many accidents have occurred there in the past? Probably zero.
Tell Mayor DeBlasio that you can't solve a problem until you know exactly what the problem is. And we know what the problem is - muslim vermin that comes here to kill and maim.
Steyn pointed out long ago how persistent the delusion of our leadership is in Western countries that are being plagued with mudslimes. They go to great lengths to put up barriers on the curb but no attempt to put any barrier at the border. Absolute insanity.
Barriers are the solution.
Move the barriers to the airports.
Move them to the ports.
Place them along the borders.
Increase the travel ban, take the barrier from 7 nations to 85.
They will just add to the clutter, congestion and disarray in Manhattan. Ugly concrete barriers. Adds to the Third World look and vibe of NYC.
Whoever makes them is getting rich.
And what about the perhaps 10s of miles of other bike lanes throughout Manhattan? Will they too get concrete barriers?
The biggest problem with barriers is access to the area for Police vehicles.
A islamofacist can go in on a bike and a autoloader with lots of full magazines.
Once again NYC thinking inside the barracade.
Yeah, how long until a bicyclist breaks their neck when these cause a collision?
