There was a stretch with little athletic talent in a neighboring district twenty or so years ago. One season was so bad that the team scored two points in the entire season. One safety.
My husband coached at the high school level for 25 years; there were bad years and state championship years. The coaches stayed the same-athletes changed. The outcomes depended some on talent, but mostly hard work and being coachable.
A huge factor that he has seen over the years is whether or not parents bought into the coachs system. If dads are jawing to their sons about how the coach knows nothing, that kid wont believe in it and do what hes supposed to on the field.
