It has been quite a year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming were big hits during the summer and both films have each raked in at least $300 million at the box office this year. In fact, it has been quite the year for superhero movies in general. As of this writing, five out of the top ten highest grossing films in the United States this year are superhero movies. Wonder Woman (#2), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (#3), Spider-Man Homecoming (#4), and The Lego Batman Movie (#10) have all done extremely well this year and, in some cases, better than expected.
The next big superhero movie everybody will have their eyes on this year is Thor: Ragnarok (November 3rd), the third film in the Thor franchise. Early reviews have some citing the new Thor movie as the best Marvel movie ever, which is quite the compliment considering how well their films have been reviewed over the years. The film will star the characters of both Thor and Hulk who were noticeably absent from Captain America: Civil War, which many fans considered an unofficial Avengers film because of all the superheroes they featured. Fans who were wondering where they were can now see them in action in the new film. Some notable casting additions for Ragnarok are Tessa Thompson and two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett. Thompson portrays the fierce warrior Valkyrie, while Blanchett will star as Thors villainous sister Hela. Part of the reason why Thor: Ragnarok has such great reviews is because of its humor, which many critics have pointed out in their reviews of the film. Ragnarok, like many other superhero films this year, is expected to do very well at the box office.

I hate most of them. Phonery fights and fake powers. Loud and interminable.
The financial corpse doesn’t stink as bad as it would have.
That’s not the same thing as being saved.
Haven’t been to the theater in several years.
Sixty years ago a superhero movie would be given a “B” budget, filmed in black and white, poor special effects, and shown on the bottom half of a drive-in double feature under Hercules And The Women From Mars.
Now it is top billing, top budgets, top CGIs. Our young people today truly live in an age of fantasy.
Real history makes for good stories and if it’s true it doesn’t even have to be plausible.
Frankly I am burned out on all of them. Too long, too much CGI, weak story lines, and overpaid actors.
Meh, I saw Superman in 1980 and could give a crap
Make a decent movie hollywood!
Actually I watched a serial a few weeks ago on YouTube, it was Shazam, it was pretty good even if it was low budget.
I loved all the Iron Man movies, and Wonder Woman.
Allot of people do.
Movie stars in the thirties and forties were adults.
After the war, stars were younger. I think it was because of the baby boom featuring kids who had money for the movies.
Now, the movies are so juvenile, you have to wonder who they are ‘programming’ for. Twelve-year olds?
I have been sick of CGI replacing film making for 20 years
Hollywood today primarily makes films for a world audience. That's why they're sweet and refreshing but also as memorable as the last can of Pepsi you drank.
It's mass consumption. It's also a business model that can't fail. even the biggest theatrical stink bomb is guaranteed to turn at least a small profit once it's released overseas (China, in particular).
I find Ray Harryhausens Claymation more thrilling than CGI
I love Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. They’ve yet to make a bad one, well, except maybe Ant-Man.
I’m fired up for Ragnarok, also Avengers:Infinity War, and sort of looking forward to Justice League. Still haven’t seen Wonder Woman, but will when I can rent it for $4 or less.
Many more superhero movies are in the pipeline. Kevin Feige, head of the MCU, has brilliantly built a cohesive universe and managed to tie together most of the films all along the way. Fox is holding its own with the X-Men universe (see Deadpool), and Sony made a good move in joining MCU and incorporating Spider-Man into it.
But the saturation point is near. Box office will probably start to sag after Infinity Wars. There are dozens more super-hero movies already in production, and many more in pre-production.
I’m enjoying it while I can...
I want Epic films, cerebral films, funny films....
Agreed, with few exceptions, I find most superhero movies to be pretty bad.
Not really. If superhero movies weren’t the current thing something else would. There’s always some license to print money, all the way up until it’s beaten into the ground, then something else.
I found that to be the case with Guardians of the Galaxy. Really enjoyed it in the theater, but it wasn’t as good upon rewatch.
