Similar situation in my golf course elitist community.
Damn lady behind me has problems with dog barking. Problem is escalated by the fact that everybody around her has dogs.

Last time she came out of her house to yell at me & my neighbors, I told her with a smile on my face that she needs to seriously think about moving to a retirement community considering there are dogs all around her. It caught her way off guard and haven’t heard a peep from her since.

My twins first year was a blur. I was nursing a lot and crashing when I did sleep so it didn’t feel like I was sleeping at all. I don’t know how I did it without any help, but I got used to it over the years.
Babies cry, it’s what they do. Some cry more than others.

People who don’t control their children need a good lesson from some authority. They can get an air conditioner for the child’s room so the window won’t be open. They can get a white noise machine for their own child’s room to try to drown out the din. They can keep the child out of restaurants and grocery stores until it has some social skills, or at least remove it when it starts making a disturbance. But until a child is socially trained and integrated into society, I’m all in favor of someone getting in the parents’ face and telling them they aren’t the center of the world.

And, yes, I would move because people who let their children cause this type of disruption are usually not balanced enough to want to be near.

My third was like that for his first two years. No one could figure out why. After he turned two and started talking, he got a lot better.

" The alternative is a stray gunshot or dognapping... "

See Elaine Benes and Kramer about the dognapping....they're experts.

Seems a little far-fetched the way he tells it. Five minutes may seem like five hours though. Better to pray for the poor parents....

I believe that children are one of God's special gifts and have no problem hearing them in regular eateries either - seems like those who complain are not averse to using their cell phones in the same establishments.

Movies are a different deal - lock the parents up and give the child to social services.....;-)

My boys could always sense when something wasn’t right with the other.
Other than that they are different as night and day.
Did you and your twin have that spidey sense?

I had downstairs neighbors from hell in my condo complex. They called the cops on me twice.Once they knock on my door at 06:30 saying there's a report from below me of screaming in my unit.I was asleep when they knocked.Turns out it was the guy across from me.The other time the cops knocked at 15:00 saying they got a noise report from below me.I was sitting quietly with my little radio at a normal volume.

These clowns wound up renting out their unit to scumbags. One used to use his pregnant girlfriend as a punching bag...loudly.Another wound up in *Federal* prison for dealing heroin.

Why should a busybody government be their authority? It does not nor should not have such a claim on them. If that means society isn’t ordered as some folks want it to be, well so be it. Disorder is freedom. Order is not. Things just happen when people are free and are not subjects,

In the past folks understood that they just may be screwed if something annoyed them, that it was their problem.

You nursed twins!!
Were you aiming for sainthood?

“Babies cry, it’s what they do. Some cry more than others.”

Yes they do.
Their only form of communication.
It’s odd how you learn to tell by the cry what is wrong.
Some babies are fussier than others.

After the boys stopped crying as much the wife and I would get disturbed by the silence.
Then they learned to talk and wouldn’t shut up.
Always something with kids.

Society is a social contract. We each have an obligation to make it as easy for those outside of our immediate family as we can to lubricate society. Crying babies are an irritant, not a lubricant. There is hardly anything more disgusting than to watch a mother let a child scream in a restaurant without trying to mitigate the situation for the surrounding diners. It’s the eroding of society from lack of education and empathetic learning. Until these people learn to control themselves in society, I’m much in favor of authority requiring them to behave in a socially responsible manner. Indian children used to be kept out of trading posts because they were not diapered and used to leave piles on the floor. Society set standards that stopped that behavior. I hope for a day when crying children are just as socially controlled.

We were relieved when our boys weren’t identical.
One looks like I did at his age and the other looks more like his mom.

When the boys were born everyone in the family was coming by to see them, unannounced.
I had one aunt who had twins.
She always called before coming by. We didn’t mind her visits because she had a lot of practical advice on raising twins.
The rest just wanted to “Gee”, “Aw shucks” and “Oh how cute”.
You would have thought people had never seen babies before.
I finally had to get my mom to intercede for us because she was much more diplomatic than me.
I was in favor of a No Visits Without Appointment sign on the door.

There is hardly anything more disgusting than to watch a mother let a child scream in a restaurant without trying to mitigate the situation for the surrounding diners.

You have a valid point regarding public places. I’ve been annoyed a few times by parents who ignore the fact that their baby is screaming or their toddler is completely out of control and acting like the demon seed; in restaurants, in movie theaters, at a school concerts, graduations, etc. That however has been the exception rather than the rule in my experience. Most of the time when baby gets fussy and starts crying, one of the parents will take the tike outside for a while, sometimes a walk, a bottle, a diaper change works and sometimes it doesn’t and mom or dad comes back in to say, “we gotta leave”. But that is not what the article was describing and discussing.

The “baby” in question wasn’t out in public but in its own home and crying as babies are apt to do sometime regardless of what the parent does or doesn’t do. And the question was whether a neighbor upon hearing a baby crying and is bothered by it, should call the police to file a noise complaint, or even put a call into CPS, as if a baby crying is the same thing as blasting a stereo or TV at ungodly levels late into the night.

Or as one of the commenters said, "What exactly are you expecting the police to do? Smother the kid? Take her away to baby booking (not actually for babies) on a charge of teething in the first degree?”

BTW - Drew Eckhardt is an asshat. Are you?

Crying babies are an irritant, not a lubricant… I’m much in favor of authority requiring them to behave in a socially responsible manner… I hope for a day when crying children are just as socially controlled.

Never mind, you answered my question.

Or not. Too much social, too much contract, is being assumed. Its just a theory, not the reality. It’s a BAD kind of BS. Moreover, it NEVER stop advancing because those lusting to run the show are like the Danes of old: pay the Dane Geld and they never go away. It doesn’t matter WHY you surrender this or that to them! only that once they get it they’ll be (possibly literally) damned before they’ll let it go.

It, frankly, doesn’t matter if society runs smoothly. Smooth, like control, is an illusion. We’ve too much lubricant. Grit in society’s gears is proof that people are free. Well oiled evidence that they are not.

And no where is that more clear than with children. An abundance of tolerance towards childishness in adults is one thing, but the want of tolerance towards childishness in children, especially babies as we are talking about here, is another.

We are seeing a so-called culture where reality has been flipped upside down: many tolerate childish adults and chide against childish children.

Want to deal with a crying baby next door? Offer help to the parents out of your own time or means with whatever may be lacking. Don’t appoint another official to do it for you. Chances are they are at their wits end and maybe, if young parents, you know something that they don’t. Babies usually have legitimate causes why they are crying. If you pay attention the parents may have too.

I walked into the house one day and my wife was crying and smiling at the same time.
She threw her arms around me and said “we are having a baby!”
She stayed happy for several months.

I walked into the house one day and she was crying hysterically
I just looked at her.
“I’m having twins!”
I tried to calm her down but she pulled away.
Before she went into the bedroom she ripped her blouse and bra off and cried “how are THESE going to feed TWO babies!”
My darling was 5’6”, 105 pounds and the spokeswoman for the local Itty Bitty T committee.

Back then the doctors were still advising pregnant women to use formula instead of breast feeding.
They told her all kinds of stuff.
To her dying day she regretted not trying.

Your sign is right on.
Nothing made us more nervous than the kids being quiet.
Jackassery was usually involved.
