For the first time in the history of the world's most famous sled dog race, several of the high-performance animals have tested positive for a prohibited drug. But race officials have refused to name the musher involved. Several dogs tested positive for the opioid pain reliever Tramadol, the governing board of the nearly 1,000-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race said in a statement. The team was tested six hours after finishing the nearly 1,000-mile race in Nome in March, officials said. They estimate the drug could have been administered between 15 hours before the test and right before it.

Wait: Tramadol is an opioid?

It never did anything for me. I thought it was akin to Advil.

I got it for a torn rotator cuff. It hurt real bad for a long time.

They only recently classified it as a class 2. I give it to my dogs ( on the advise of my vet) as long as it’s just tramadol and not ultram with acetaminophen in it. This is not uncommon.

Under a vet’s supervision, this wouldn’t seem too big a deal. It’s just ‘breaking’ now when it happened in March.

Same for me with my hip. No better than Acetaminophen.

Tramadol hydrochloride is a prescription pain medication. It is licensed for the treatment of moderate to moderately severe pain in adults. Even though tramadol is an opioid (morphine-like) medication, it is not considered a narcotic or a controlled substance by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

I could never be a sled dog. Neurologist has me on that crap for 7 years now. I think I’d be better off with medical Mary Jane except the Feds won’t let me buy (or keep my)Guns if I’m a registered pot user.

I am kind of amazed. I thought this was 100% clean sport in the frozen outdoors. If they found one case there are others. Opiods relive pain and will ordinarily slow down the dog.....But since the dog is tied to others he has to keep up with the team. A nasty strategy that can kill the dog I would think.

Tramadol has fast become one of the vets #1 pain relievers for doggs.

It works great but none of those human opioid side effects.

Its a synthetic manmade opioid so its not REALLy an opioid. And the other half is related to the anti depessant effexor.

Not that my doctor had me addicted to these things for over 5 years while telling my there was no medical way it could be possible, but, If I were you, I would stay very far away from Tramadol/Ultram.

The test was six hours after the race. Blood test indicated Tramadol was administered up to 15 hours before the test. More likely the hurting dogs were given Tramadol right after the race. But that doesn’t tell us anything about before or during the race, which takes about 10 or so days.

Ultram is the original brand name for the drug that is known generically as Tramadol. The version with acetaminophen is called Ultracet.

I have taken Trmadol for years, but I take it very sparingly. I have back problems, and had two pairs of vertebrae fused about 5 years ago. I take Celecoxib daily and only take Tramadol if my pain is really severe, and usually only half of a 50mg tablet. My pain is seldom severe and a bottle usually lasts me several years. It does help me if I have severe pain. I have never had to give it to any of my dogs, but I have heard of its use for dogs for years now.

The Iditarod is obviously very strict concerning what can be given to the dogs if Tramadol is on the banned list. The pharmacists I know were surprised when it was classified as a C-4 medication. My guess is that The Iditarod doesn’t want the mushers giving their dogs anything strong enough to mask the pain on an injured dog because I don’t think it has any performance enhancing qualities. In fact, with me it is more likely to cause drowsiness, but then again, just about every medication I have ever taken makes me sleepy.

Tramadol is not very effective except intravenously

And it has limited euphoria properties

It’s effective though for moderate pain but not say major burn or bone cancer in the hip

This is an hysteria piece btw

Opioids!....were all gonna die

A. Tramadol is not an opioid.
B. Tramadol is frequently prescribed for dogs in pain.
C. The Iditarod is a grueling event that leaves every dog that runs it in pain.
D. It is therefore logical that dogs would be prescribed Tramadol AFTER a race.
