Cuba remembered the 50th anniversary of the death of a key figure in the Marxist revolution that overturned U.S.-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista and brought the Fidel Castroled regime to power.
Ernesto Che Guevara was executed in Bolivia on October 9, 1967, and the CIA's role in his death remains controversial.
"His captors cared nothing for the dignity and etiquette his revolutionary legacy demanded, and [he] was vilely murdered. But history only remembers the cowardice of those murderers, while the colossal example of Che lives on and multiples day after day," Cubas vice president, Miguel Diaz-Canela likely successor to the Castro brothers as the islands presidentnoted at a commemoration rally on Sunday.
The secret services had trained and were involved with the battalion that would capture and kill Guevara, as declassified CIA documents archived by the George Washington University showed.
According to one debriefing document, the order to kill Guevara and other Marxist fighters trying to bring the Cuban revolution to Bolivia came on the morning of October 9 and marked a departure from previous orders. The first soldier who was given the task to execute Guevara was unable to carry out the order, so it was passed on to another soldier who fortified his courage with several beers.
The debriefing also confirmed that Guevara, who had refused to sit down as ordered by the executioner, uttered his final words: Know this, you are killing a man before the soldier shot him with his M2 Carbine, a combat rifle, knocking Guevara back into the wall of the small house.
CIA operative Felix Rodriguez was with the battalion that captured Guevara and interrogated the revolutionary fighter ahead of his death. As he recounted in interviews years later, the order to execute the prisoner came from the Bolivian military's high command, while his orders

I thought Castro had Che killed because he was getting too popular.
He had Execution Competitions with Raoul, Che REALLY loved killing people, as long as there was no personal risk. He WROTE that in letters to his dad, he hid nothing.
His grandparents were rich YACHT MAKERS from America. They emigrated to Argentina cuz at that point in world history the really well-heeled were living there. Argentina was then foreseen as an Economic Powerhouse in the making.
He wasn’t poor at all growing up and later he wasn’t a good soldier (asthma, cowardice).
He was captured with a full mag of ammo in his pistol.
His words:
“I’m more valuable to you alive..!”

I read a detailed report on Che’s capture and execution. Probably here on FR.
The main reason he failed was the Bolivians who lived in the country were just not interested. He got no local help tho the KGB had a network working in the Capital to support him.
The CIA wanted to keep him alive to mine him for info. The Bolivians didn’t.
Che had run Cuba’s economy into hell —he was Economic Minister, right?
But he was famous so firing him would have been unpopular.
Instead he “promoted” Che, “You’re so great I’m going to have you EXPORT our wonderful Revolution...”
But nah..! Fidel was more or less trying to get Che killed.
Which, finally, is what happened.
Che is alive and well, and living in North America.
Another thing I recall is when he was captured, he acted cowardly trying to save his life by betraying his comrades.
When he was actually executed, he behaved better, thinking of his family.
Still he was a monster and deserved death.
His captors cared nothing for the dignity and etiquette his revolutionary legacy demanded, and [he] was vilely murdered. But history only remembers the cowardice of those murderers, while the colossal example of Che lives on and multiples day after day,”
He was trying to overthrow the Bolivian government in a bloody revolution for crips sake. Of course they killed him and good on the CIA for helping. Jeez.
Che never really existed, but was a CIA creation to keep the military industrial complex going so that they are prepared for another false flag creation called Bin Laden. Bin Laden himself was to prep for yet another creation called Kim Jong Un. It all makes sense when you shut off your brain.
Che was a bad guy.
His demise was a good thing.

A final blow or shot given to kill a wounded person or animal. "he administered the coup de grâce with a tickle to Che's ribs!"
Synonyms: death blow, finishing blow, kiss of death, final blow
After Che left Cuba he was a nothing.
Good that Che is dead. But just north of me at CU Boulder there are many other Che brothers. They should watch themselves and their actions because self defense WILL be applied.
Bolivian Police Sergeant Mario-Teran, Che's executioner.
Che was a monster.
It is good that he is dead, but it might have been better if we had mined him for information.
I think he would have talked, and plenty.
“His captors cared nothing for the dignity and etiquette his revolutionary legacy demanded,”
I missed where he ever showed any dignity and etiquette towards his murder victims.
