On a day that saw the Vice-President of the United States walk out of the Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers game because of players taking a knee during the national anthem, the Kansas City Chiefs had a very good night on Sunday Night Football.
With their 42-34 victory over the Houston Texans in the Lone Star State, the Chiefs had the fifth win in a row and continued their unbeaten streak this season.
However, with a 10.6/18 in metered market results, last night was not so stellar for NBC and the NFL. In what is a seemingly ever escalating political atmosphere for the ratings battered game, thats a dip of 3% from last weeks SNF Colts vs. the 46-18 winning Seattle Seahawks match-up. That is also a season low for SNF in a season that has been mired in controversy and ratings decline.
To add further context, llast nights injury filled SNF was up just 4% in MM numbers from the comparable game of last year when the New York Giants battled against the Green Bay Packers.
The sting in that, and a little bit of overview is needed here, is that season low SNF of October 9, 2016 was up against the Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton town hall debate. A widely watched and defining debate that came on the weekend of revelations of very inappropriate and damning remarks about women that then Apprentice host made to Access Hollywoods Billy Bush back in 2005, comments then candidate Trump referred to as locker room talk in the town hall meet-up.
Last weeks 8:30 11:45 PM ET SNF went on to snag a 5.8/21 among adults 18-49 and 16.73 million viewers, which was down from the week before. The Giants vs. Packers game of October 9 last year eventually drew a 5.9/16 in the key demo and an audience of 16.62 million.
Well update with more SNF numbers and the rest of what was on the Big 4 last night later on. As something to tide you over until then, last nights game, which had a 16-point spread at halftime, peaked 9-9:30 PM ET with a 11.5/9 MM rating.
I’ve been a Chiefs fan for 30 years. I haven’t watched a single game this season, but I did manage to get a lot more done around the house last night.
It needs to go down way more. They lost hundreds of viewers from the previous week. That is not a big number. We need millions and millions week to week. I quite and I love Football. It has been as hard as I thought to be honest. Super Bowl will be very hard.......hopefully they come to their senses by then.
Didn’t watch! Not even my cowboys...that’s ok had better things to do!!! Jerry jones is a freakin disgusting SOB!! America’s team...pfft..more like anti-America’s team when the owner takes a knee and sides with those whinny cow chip on their shoulder multimillionaire thugs..IT’S OVER!!!
How do we know the ratings numbers are accurate? When we see a poll, we question: Who did they poll? Was the poll sample population representative of the entire population?
I have the same question here. Is the sample representative?
I didn’t watch on Sunday. I usually do, even though the Patriots weren’t playing.
I skipped the game even though the local team (Texans) were playing. My wife and I watched a couple of DVR’d episodes of Battlebots instead.
I don’t wish to be associated with the NFL. It’s like being associated with the democrat party.
Battlebots is great tv.
According to this article there were 50,000 people (in 20,000 households) whose TV viewings are counted towards ratings:

This article mentions that Nielsen viewers live in 31 “meter markets”
http://tvline.com/2014/05/29/tv-ratings-nielsen-to-increase-sample-size/
It looks like larger, liberal areas may be oversampled based not this data. So it’s unclear how many people living in suburban and rural areas are being counted.
Actually, Nielsen—thanks to cheap computer technology—is now seriously looking at increasing its sample size by a factor of ten or more. Essentially, year-round “sweeps month” measurements with over 100,000 metered households.
My local sports talk radio guy is claiming that the NFL’s ratings are actually UP. They must have a fake poll they’re out there pushing someplace.
I think these numbers mean more then just hundreds, more like thousands.
Looking forward to the next round!
Don’t think this decision is going to boost viewership...

Ratings go up for Cowboys games, but that’s about it.
Hmm that’s interesting.
