I don't believe I've ever heard of that version. It looks..perfect for our purposes. ;d There a lot of images of Gould looking like a total d-bag. And I have to add Rex Ryan after I heard his comments from last week.

Re: I don't believe I've ever heard of that version. It looks..perfect for our purposes. ;d There a lot of images of Gould looking like a total d-bag.

Well, The Long Goodbye is my favorite Raymond Chandler novel and by far his most personal novel as it was written during the period when his wife was dying. Combined with his awareness of his own flaws: his alcoholism and the doubts he felt about the value of his writing, his life then was forcing him into fits of melancholy and his talking about possible suicide.

The film, The Long Goodbye, was much anticipated by the Hollywood Buzz in 1972. I was not a big Eliot Gould fan even then but I enjoyed his acting in Robert Altman's M*A*S*H and since Altman was also directing 'Goodbye,' I figured it was to be a sure fire hit. Boy, was I ever wrong.

As best I can recall, my writing pard at the time, Sal Manna, wangled us a way into the audience for the United Artists preview in late summer of '72. The word on the street was that the film's time frame had been moved to the 1970s, so I was really looking forward to how it would come off-- It didn't by light years.

Chandler's plots always were somewhat complex and convoluted, but this was like watching paint that bubbled and bubbles but never get dry.

The Leigh Brackett (She's one of my favorite writers) screenplay adaptation deviates drastically from the 1953 novel. Don't really know if it was her screwing the pooch on this writing or if it was Altman and/or the studio making the changes, but there are so many literary liberties with all components of the plot and characters that one could say it out Altman's usual style of Altman's normal storytelling by overlapping dialogue and plot line. It was a friggin' disaster that left the audience with bug eyes trying to believe they saw what they saw. I didn't head anyone say anything good about the film but leaving I heard someone laughing uproariously, I turned and found Troy Donahue almost having a conniption fit with three male companions. Do not know if it was someone's joke or if he was just so damn tickled that he was not in The Long Goodbye.

The previews over the next month or so were so badly trashed, that the film's release was cancelled. After 6 months of re-shoots and editing, it premiered in New York March 7, 1973, and promptly sank, not earning much, if any profit.

I didn't see the re-release until sometime in the early 2000s and it was not much better than I recalled from the preview some 30-plus years before.

I’ll take the Patriots. The rest of my picks to follow tomorrow. I’m not betting against Tom Brady.
Thanks for the heads up!

As someone who usually picks against his favorite team lately, I know how you feel. After they almost beat Atlanta I felt bad for not picking them, even though I was right. ;d

Sitting here watching the Tribe dominate the Yankees so I may as well get the rest of my picks in... I already took the Pats tonight. Maybe I should surf over and check the score? Anyway, here we go with the rest of the schedule....

Thursday, Oct 5, 2017

New England at Tampa Bay 8:25 pm CBS Raymond James Stadium I took the Pats....

Sunday, Oct 8, 2017

Arizona at Philadelphia 1:00 pm FOX Lincoln Financial Field Not quite ready to jump on the Eagles bandwagon, but 3 - 1 speaks for itself. The Cards have been disappointing. I think they're trending down while the Iggles are trending up. Eagles.

Buffalo at Cincinnati 1:00 pm CBS Paul Brown Stadium Buffalo showed me something by going to Atlanta and winning. There is no way they should lose this game ... but it is a classic trap, coming off a huge road win and playing the hapless though still dangerous Bungles. But let's say the Bills are for real. Bills.

Carolina at Detroit 1:00 pm FOX Ford Field Big win for Carolina last week. Detroit has been very good, losing only to the Falcons. I'm going to ride the Old Georgia Bulldog Matthew Stafford till he shows me otherwise. Lions.

Jacksonville at Pittsburgh 1:00 CBS Heinz Field Jax has won a couple of games and is moving in the right direction. But... the Kneelers at home? Nah. Kneelers.

L.A. Chargers at N.Y. Giants 1:00 pm CBS MetLife Stadium One of these teams has to win right? I suppose the remote possibility of a tie exists but.... Given that the Bolts will be playing at what is essentially 10 AM their time, that may be enough to tip the scales to the G-Men. Giants.

N.Y. Jets at Cleveland 1:00 pm FOX First Energy Stadium I guess my reports of the Jets demise were premature... have they actually won two in a row?! And now the Browns..... As bad as Gang Green is, the Browns are worse and seem incapable of not turning the ball over. Jay - Eee - Tee - Ess JETS JETS JETS!

San Francisco at Indianapolis 1:00 pm FOX Lucas Oil Stadium Two other woebegone squads.... And another West Coast team playing on East Coast time. Who is the Colts quarterback? I don't know. Brian Hoyer I know and if nothing else the Niners have shown they can score. Niners.

Tennessee at Miami 1:00 pm CBS Hard Rock Stadium The Titans... what the heck happened to them in Houston last week? And what is the status of Mariota? But hey, it's only the Phish who were shutout in London last week... by the Saints D. Titans.

Baltimore at Oakland 4:05 pm CBS Oakland Coliseum The only reason I give the Ravens a snowball's chance in hell in this game is because Derek Carr is out. But will that be enough? The last two weeks the Ravens O has been anemic and the D has been pretty questionable too. OTOH, the Raiders have not exactly been setting the world on fire. Improbably and against all odds, the Nevermores win. Ravens.

Seattle at L.A. Rams 4:05 pm CBS Los Angeles Memorial ColiseumLA Rams... another team in the 'are they for real' category (the Bill and the Chiefs also being members). After dominating the Cowboys last week the Bluish Man Group comes to the Colisseum... I like the Lambs here as I think the Seahags are over-rated. Plus I can't stand Michael Bennett. Rams.

Green Bay at Dallas 4:25 pm FOX AT&T Stadium Ah, the marquis match-up! Bendy, what has happened to the thought-to-be-mighty Cowboys? Losses to Denver and to - gasp! - the Rams?! The Pack was dominated by Atlanta but has otherwise been strong (okay, an OT was required to beat Cincinnati...). With all the 'Boys woes and Aaron Rodgers playing to form..... Packers.

Kansas City at Houston 8:30 pm NBC NRG Stadium The only unbeaten team traveling to Houston to take on the Titans and the new wunderkind of the NFL.... Can Watson have another game like last week? Sure. But not against the Chiefs D. KC wins and stays unbeaten. Chiefs.

Monday, Oct 9, 2017

Minnesota at Chicago 8:30 pm ESPN Soldier Field Minnesota has no Bradford but they still have a very good defense, and Mitchell Trubisky has never taken a regular season snap. That does not bode well for Da Bears. Vikings.

On the 1st Bye and Bye of the season are the cursed Broncos, Falcons, Ain'ts & Deadskins

Cleveland wins!

Bender2, have you watched “Bosch”? I think it’s very good, and the music selections are excellent.

Yes, "Bosch" is an excellent series on Amazon Prime. I've watched since it premiered two seasons ago and am awaiting the next one.

Gazooks-- I wish they still did 39 episodes for each season like they did back in my day. Yet that brings up the following dilemma even more--

I just hope that the series keeps up the quality of its plot line and characters so that I do not lose my suspension of disbelief. That 'suspension of disbelief' is how we are able to enjoy most fiction because in true reality, what happens in films and TV is not reality in any way, fashion or form. Sadly, that happens often with any series that runs more than a season or two, they start leaping the shark.

"Breaking Bad" was one example as over 5 seasons and 62 episodes the viewer was continually given a Walter White that always managed to keep one step ahead of whatever MacGuffin he was faced with-- No matter how remarkable the results of his super smarts, random luck or chance happenstance that saves Walter to carry on, it starts to chip away at the believing what you see could actually happen.

CGI has ruined most 'action flicks' for me as most movie makers use it instead of good character and/or plot. The CGI gore or action sequences becomes the only reason for the film being made because the producer expect that 9 to 17 year old boys will pay and pay and pay to come back over and over again to see it.

Sorry, did not mean to get onto my soapbox--

When I do, I recall back in the early 1960s when I was in my teens one of my parents' good friends was actually a rocket scientist working with NASA on the Apollo Program's Saturn V moon rocket. If you asked him, "What's the time?" he'd tell you how to build a watch.

Love & miss ya, Dick Reel! Wish you were around to make the day go by better--
