Saudi textbook recalled due to photo of Yoda next to King Faisal

A social studies textbook in Saudi Arabia was recalled for including a photo depicting a Star Wars character next to a king.

The black and white photo, by Saudi artist Abdullah Al Shehri, features the small, green Jedi Yoda seated next to King Faisal as he signed the United Nations Charter in San Francisco in 1945.

Saudi education minister Ahmed al-Eissa apologized for the mistake and said measures were being taken to correct the error.

"The Education Ministry regrets unintentional error that appeared in the picture of the signing of the Charter of the United Nations Commission on social studies and national decision," he wrote. "The ministry has begun printing a corrected copy of the curriculum and withdrawing the previous copy and formed a legal committee to determine the source of the error and to take the proper measures."

Shehri, a 26-year-old artist who goes by the nickname Shaweesh, created the image as part of a series that inserts pop culture characters into historical photos and learned it had turned up in a textbook through a text from his mother.

"I am the one who designed it, but I am not the one who put it in the book," he told the New York Times.

Shehri said he decided to insert Yoda into the photo because he reminded him of King Faisal and is the same color as the Saudi flag.

"He was wise and was always strong in his speeches," he said. "So I found that Yoda was the closest character to the king. And also Yoda and his light saber -- it's all green."

Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to Saudi Arabia.

I don’t recall King Faisal as so frail looking when he came to Boston in the ‘60s.

Happened to be going into the Copley Square Hotel when he pulled up in a gold Rolls; followed by a 2-tier car carrier with a fleet of Rolls Royce limos.

As he made his way into the building, he handed out gold Rolex watches to the doormen and baggage handlers as tips. I gotta tell you, impressed this country bumpkin. :)

Cool story. Subsequently Faisal gave away hundreds of gold canes.

Yep. Back in those days, you could go into the hotel like the Copley, Ritz or Kenmore coffee shop, and order a cup of hot tea water [no tea bag], and get it for free. We would put ketchup in it, make a poor-man tomato soup ... and add a few saltines, that were always in a basket on the counter.

We were dirt poor college kids .... barely a step above a street urchin. Survivors of the urban jungle. Good times. :)

Yum and hail the inventors of survival eating.

Percy Spencer is generally credited with inventing the modern microwave oven after World War II from radar technology developed during the war. Named the "Radarange", it was first sold in 1946.

Momofuku Ando Instant noodles were invented by Taiwanese-Japanese inventor Momofuku Ando in Japan. It was first marketed on 25 August 1958 by Ando's company, Nissin, under the brand name Chikin Ramen.

My mom had none of these so we survived on
