Charging an electric car vs AC
8 Sept 2017

Posted on 09/08/2017 6:32:23 PM PDT by rey

How much electricity is required to charge an electric car versus running an air conditioner. My county pushes electric cars big time but always blames AC for excessive power usage during a heat wave. While I am certain there are more AC units than electric cars, wouldn't unplugging a charging car make a significant contribution toward reduced energy usage during a crisis? What about electric heaters? Do they use as much as an AC?

Imagine having to evacuate for a hurricane in an electric car.

Most electric car manufacturers recommend a fifty amp circuit for reliable charging. Most air conditioners use a fifteen to thirty amp circuit. This roughly means that the electric car takes about twice as much electric power as an air conditioning unit.

Cooling air is tougher. Tougher than heating it.

It’s all about transducers. A rule of thumb is 10% losses per transducer. And turning electric energy to mechanical energy is a huge loss.

I had a Leaf EV. Charging from a plain 110v outlet pulled about 1400W, about the same as a hairdryer.

Cooling air is tough. That’s the second law of thermodynamics at work.

Do the electric cars also have refrigeration/AC?

Note that EVs are typically charged at night, while AC peaks during the day.
They aren’t really competing for power (at least not as far as you’re assuming).

There is a Tesla charging station in my small hometown “about 5000 pop.” I think there are 5 or 6 posts. Most of the time there is not a single car there.

I think I read that it only takes around 20 minutes to charge one there.

Imagine having to evacuate for a hurricane in an electric car.

Best observation I've ever heard.

But,,,but,,,if,,,if,,, If everybody drove EV's we wouldn't have these hurricanes.

OK you are comparing Oranges and Dinosaurs here. Small cars have small conditioners while large ones have large AC. Depending on the outside temperate and humidity an AC unit can take little or no power or a great deal of power. What voltage and amperage are you using to charge a battery? How big a battery are you charging and how fast are you charging. The moral of the story is that the electric car is killing kids in Africa mining materials for the electric battery therefore electric cars are racist./s

Overnight was usually more than enough. You’d rarely drain it to near empty.

Mine had a 26kW/h battery. Top end Tesla is IIRC 100kW/h. If you’re serious about an EV, you install a separate 220v line and make arrangements with electric company to charge at lowest demand times.

Do you have a map of where charging stations when you’re out and about?

Useless information without knowing how long at that rate of charge (1.4 Kw per hour,) from empty to full...

Yes. Navigation system shows charging stations, and computes most efficient route there. Usually you know what’s available before heading out for the trip.
