A set of twins are celebrating another milestone birthday this week.
Ira Spieker and Ida Spieker Melhmann turn 101 years-old on September 4.
Last year, the Iowa-born twins marked their centennial with a massive celebration amongst family in their home state.
As far as we know they are the oldest living brother-sister twins in the United States, which is mind boggling. Its like, there has to be another brother-sister twin but we couldnt find it, Iras son Steve Spieker told 24 Hour News 8.
According to Grand Rapids affiliate WOOD, Ira ended up in the ICU last month with a staph infection and they werent sure if he would make the trip for their birthday bash this year.
Physicians were saying, I dont think hes going to make it. I said, You dont know my dad and you have to give him a fighting chance because I know who he is the energizer bunny, Steve Spieker said.
But two days after he left the ICU, Ira was walking around again, the station reports. He will be traveling to Michigan for this years celebration.
People ask me, you know, How did we reach 101? and I say, well you have to rely on the strength of the Lord, Ira Spieker said.
This guy is sharp as a tack at 101. He wasn’t even wearing glasses & was able to read the paper.
The age my parents would be if they were still alive. I sure miss them.
3 of my grandparents and an aunt lived into their mid 90’s, dad is 84 and real healthy. He has an 87 y/o brother. Hope all this is a good omen.
I understand that because they had so many candles on their cakes, the affair had to be held at the firehouse. /sarc
Congrats on a long life.
I heard that one keeps forgetting the others birthday.
My mom is approaching 96, and though the body is weak, she is as sharp and determined as she was at 30. She was a Rosie the Riveter...says something about who she is.
My Mom will be 95 in Nov. Still lives across the street from me. She does her own housework, cooks and drives her 26 year old bomb to the grocery and church.
And here they are as tiny children.
That is the kind of 95 year old I hope to be someday!
