Des Moines police say a driver should've been driving but was texting instead...and hit a bridge, flipping his car over onto the sidewalk.
It happened around 10am Monday on the Easton Boulevard bridge over Four Mile Creek near the Four Mile Community Center.
The driver was lucky...he walked away from the accident and no one was walking on the sidewalk when his car flipped over.
But he's being cited for using an electronic device while driving.
I don’t think that flipping your car over could be considered “lucky”. But it is good to see one of these texting fools get what he deserves. I’m all for treating texters the same as DWIs. They are deadly dangerous.
“I dont think that flipping your car over could be considered lucky. “
Flipping the car was not ‘bad luck’. It was a consequence of his carelessness. Walking away from it was lucky.
He should be cited for inattentive and/or reckless driving, not for “using an electronic device while driving.”
These iphone addicts are dangerous.
Weaving all over the road, running stop signs/lights, ignoring traffic control signs and areas...just being total DUmb asses.
I cannot stand the idiots.
The idea that someone thinks their damned Facebook posting about their last coffee stop is more important than attentive driving is appalling in a so-called "society".
Left to me, they'd be digging them out of their fourth point of contact.
Here is why texting is so dangerous: Time travel.
You look down and think you are only taking a couple of seconds, but ten seconds later you look up and you’re going off the road.
I have a dash camera. I’ve recorded at least two people driving their cars off the road while texting. It’s rampant. I have 46 years and well over a million miles driving under me, and I’ve never seen the sheer quantity of middle of the day one car accidents as I’ve seen the last few years. I consider it an epidemic.
It’s time we treat texters EXACTLY like we treat drunk drivers. Truth be told, they are more dangerous than all but the most inebriated drunk drivers.
In Denver its the driving, toking, and texting combo that’s dangerous....
“Flips”, as in literally like a pancake.
Not flip with a naughty finger.
It has occurred to me that it might be time to combine the two high school courses of Drivers Ed. and Typing 101.
It would have been a much better Accident if the Bridge didn’t have a Sidewalk.
Notice how there is no damage to anything except the Car.
A Crane and a little Bondo and she’ll be just like new.
Was he using a flip phone?
Texting and driving is good...it cleans out the gene pool of stupid people.
Is that a BMW? If it is, figures.
Well, at least he landed neatly with little damage to infrastructure such as curbs, walls, railings and fences. Bet he cracked the sidewalk though, better bill him for that.
People who cannot walk and text safely 100% of the time should not assume they can drive and text safely at many times their walking speed.
Glad he didn’t kill someone else.
Bet he was taking selfies while he was upside down.
Incorrect. There’s often collateral damage and death.
“But he’s being cited for using an electronic device while driving.”
How about reckless driving.
For the record, it has never been the case that you can never have too many supply and demand stories at hand, contemplate the market for lobsters. In recent years, supply has climbed dramatically. For a time, demand climbed as well, especially with additional global demand from China and elsewhere. But the price/pound received by lobster fishermen peaked back in 2005, and now has fallen to a multi-decade low.
