Vontaze Burfict plans to appeal his suspension but this is clearly an illegal hit

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict once again finds himself on the wrong side of NFL discipline. The the oft-penalized defender is reportedly facing a five-game suspension for a hit on Chiefs fullback Anthony Sherman during the second week of the preseason.

The reported Burfict suspension is drawing plenty of attention on Monday morning, with folks wondering whether he actually hit Sherman illegally.

In fact, it's a new NFL rule that's being used to penalize Burfict, one of the most penalized defenders in NFL history. This offseason, the NFL made it a rule that any running back or wide receiver or tight end running a receiving route would be considered in a defenseless position.

Ridiculous, but another example of how the wussified NFL is desperately seeking to stave off its own demise by going along with the people seeking to kill it.

So you can no longer tackle a receiver who gets behind you?

"So you can no longer tackle a receiver who gets behind you?"

If the ball wasn't thrown to him, the play is on the other side of the field and he's not blocking - then yes, that's correct.

So true, when the sport is sanitized to the point of unwatchability, something will replace the NFL just as MMA/UFC has replace boxing.

No, it was the hit up near the line of scrimmage, against the receiver who wasn't involved in the play (since the QB had already released the ball downfield)...

You have to look at the fullback crossing short over the middle. The ball is already on its way deep and Burfict clocks him about 35 yards away from where the ball is thrown. In other words, don’t look at where the ball is thrown, look closer to the line.

...something will replace the NFL...

I think the problem is that it is already happening. I dumped TV in ‘97 but am, of course, exposed to it from time to time. I as at my son’s house in Chicago a year ago and they had a football game on. I was amazed at the “fake” line markings on the field added through video imagery, and the floating camera above the field.

But the amount of commercial breaks killed it for me. Once I got over the new tech, I went into the other room and played video games with my grandson. Professional sports are dead to me.

That said, my wife and I are going to a Louisville Bats game today. The minors are a lot more fun to watch live, which is the only way to do it.

Tackling is for dummies, we are talking American Football where the majority of racists are not allowed to touch anyone for any reason /s

Is that his real name or something he made up? I checked his bio, which failed to mention his parents names, but gave his brother’s last name as Miller.

Not sure. Probably inspired by a similarly named VoIP telephone service company. Then later, reflecting on his creativity said to himself “This is burfict!’, and the rest was history.

Back in the day when I played, I only made those types of hits while blocking defensive players. If a linebacker is crossing to follow a sweep to the other side of the field, he’d better keep his head up and eyes on the O-linemen and not just the running back. I would turn into his path and lay him out. Never got called for a penalty. Just blocking.

Didn’t see the hit, so I don’t know - but Burfict does already have a rep as a cheap-shot artist, so the refs may have flagged him faster than someone without that baggage.

Why don’t they just put tutus on all offensive players and get it over with?

Yeah, but there is an infrastructure of $$ here (stadiums, team investments) that is worlds away from boxing.
