Consumer Reports: Don't Buy Microsoft Surface (Survey of owners cites reliability issues)

Following the subscriber survey of over 90,000 readers, Consumer Reports estimated that 25 percent of devices would have issues by the second year of ownership. The issues included freezing, unexpected shut downs and unresponsive touch screens, but the non-profit didn't list how many of each complaint it got.

Microsoft disputes the survey.  “While we respect Consumer Reports, we disagree with their findings. Microsoft’s real-world return and support rates and customer satisfaction data show we are on par if not better than other devices in the category," a Microsoft spokesperson told Laptop Mag. "We stand firmly behind the quality and reliability of the Surface family of devices and continue to make quality our primary focus.”

Some of Microsoft's Surface devices have earned Laptop Mag's Editors' Choice award, including the Surface Pro and Surface Book. We still recommend them.

Consumer Reports last made a stir in the laptop world in December when it didn't recommend Apple's MacBook Pros after spotty battery life testing. The magazine reversed course in January after Apple issued a patch.

We bought a 120 for the company and most people hated them after a while. I love my SP4 but I know how to fix it’s issues where less techie people will struggle. We had to RMA probably 30 at least due to charging or firmware issues. Not to mention the first gen SP3 dock would eventually die... all of them lol. We use HP X2 1012’s now and they have been much more reliable.

I’m good with never buying another Microsoft product ever again. My next computer will be ordered from the factory without a hard drive. Hard drive will be purchased separately. It’s the only way to get around the contracts.

I’ve got two. The family uses the Pro 3 docked most of the time and I use the Pro 4 as my primary laptop. I haven’t had issues with either one and I’m a heavy user.

I’ve been using my Surface Pro 2 heavily for several years now without any issues. I absolutely love it.

Whole family has Lenovo Yoga's upgraded to Windows 10. The Yoga's have a flip screen that transforms them into tablets. Due to this, they are built to withstand a ton of punishment yet they are still light.

Got them a while back with SSD memory and the newer intel processors so they run quietly and cool with long lasting batteries. This was several years ago so I assume most laptops come with these features now. All three laptops are still working fine with heavy, daily use.

They seem like nice machines, but cost a bit more than I care to pay. Considering that you’re paying a premium price, they should be Rolls Royce reliable.

I have a Surface Pro 4 and my wife has a 3 and neither of us have any problems in the two years we’ve owned them. Very reliable and just the right size.

For me, I’ve had my Surface Book for 7 months and it has been great for me at work.

I use it every day. Dock and undock it at my desk.

I’d take it over any Dell piece of excrement I have been given at work in the previous 10 years.

“we are on par if not better than other devices in the category,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Laptop Mag.

There are a lot of devices in the category. There’s a reason Apple is the only one making serious money on them.

Even Consumer Reports says you have a 75% chance of being OK in buying one for that length of time. . . so three out of four buyers of these devices are like you. On the other hand, the odds for the other buyers were worse than playing Russian Roulette. That seems to be the problem.

Wow. For what reasons?

Hardware is not Microsofts strength.
