Many people think that Scott Joplin was followed immediately by the big Swing bands. The biopics about Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and others, portrayed the music they played as sidemen in the 20’s and early 30’s as gooey, ricky-ticky stuff.

In 1984, my parents worked with Fred Waring at a choral music workshop at Penn State. The day after the workshop ended, Waring passed away.
