I’m going to guess that mother nature took care of a problem (as usual) and the new bees will be super bees....working twice as fast as the old bees.

There was no mystery except to people who write articles for newspapers apparently.

Varroa mites.

Bee populations here are soaring.

Of course, the reason is because the hyper aggressive African bees have made it here and they have a much higher rate of reproduction and they are freezing out the native honeybees.

Not sure that’s a good thing

Western Hemisphere honey bees are not native, or at least not aboriginal. They originated in Europe and were imported here in the colonial era.

In other words, things ebb and flow in nature, and everything eventually returns to stasis.

So QUIT PANICKING over one-year snapshots!

You are correct, native is the wrong term, domestic is more appropriate.

Feral African bees are displacing domesticated honeybees.

I'd say Trump Effect but I'm not sure how the bees would know.

My Dad and brother keep bees and have lost several hives over the last few years. The most resilient hives are the bees that they catch when they swarm from a hive not a kept hive, in other words a wild swarm.

They have noticed a drop in honey production from the hives that have survived the last few year as well. In some cases getting very little honey from their supers.

Hope this recovery continues!

African bees have made it here and they have a much higher rate of reproduction and they are freezing out the native honeybees.

Any sign of aggression and the beekeeper will subject the queen to the hive tool test (smash and replace her). All bees in the hive carry the genetics of the queen. Fix her, fix the hive.

The media terrorism about africanized bees back in the 70's was just the 1970's version of a pitbull story.

...freezing out the native honeybees.

Typical bee colonial attitude.

The invaders are, in fact, doing the work that native bees simply won't do.
