SisterK, my son is not a scientist, just an avid outdoorsman, so he does not have a valid theory of his own, though he has seen the lights many times and guided other people in to see them so he knows they are real. The best theory from the many tests done by scientific studies is the LEMUR study. You can read about it and their resulting theory here: http://shadowboxent.brinkster.net/brownplasma.html
They think it is electrically charged plasma produced by the mountain and its surrounding geological and natural properties, and then reacting with the magnetic field created by the quartz and magnetite in the mountain.

If you want to go see the lights, he says the best chance is in the fall and from an overlook, I think may be off HWY 181, but I’m not sure. If you decide to go, FReepmail me and I’ll get detailed directions from him for you on the best place to observe.
