I was born a liberal, in the mid 50s, in Southern California. Everyone was. We werent political, we were righteous. We werent informed, we were pliable. Craving fan-boys gorging flowery rhetoric. Low-caloric in substance, refute free. Facts are mean. And there is nothing new under the sun.
Planted my grubstake in the South after the 94 earthquake. I like these people, theyre real. Most seemed to go hog wild on honesty. And one boasting theyre basking in high cotton is as scarce as hens teeth. Hypocrisy is answered with, well bless your heart. And then youre out. I came from a magical place steeped in myth, the city of angels. I unsheathed the sword of liberal cliches and slashed with abandon, I was magnificent. A warrior for good without a cause but to be wrong on just about everything. You cant be right and a liberal, you need to chose one or the other.
Im curious about any other conversions to Freeperdom. More so, fairly recent stories about family/friends who have seen the light now that liberalism has been unmasked and double-downed on full-blown lunacy.
As a teenager, I had read and dismissed Marx and hung door knocker fliers for Barry Goldwater.
Stayed that way.
Born and raised in the south and thank God I was. Never a liberal and mocked their insanity whenever in encountered it.
Spent 15 months in the land of fruits and nuts where it was more important to indoctronate kindergarteners into the “normalcy” of sodomy than it was to build power plants or invest in water treatment... Saw 4 year olds with full sets of false teeth because fearmongering about Florida was more important than public health.
Liberalism is a mental illness.. Older I get the more convinced I am of that. People raised full of trigger finger indignation but not enough self esteem to fight group think and mob bullying.
I flirted with liberalism briefly during my college years and early career as a journalist.
But, like my Superman Underoos, I outgrew it.
“full of trigger finger indignation but not enough self esteem to fight group think and mob bullying.”
Oh, dayum, but is that delicious.
I tried liberalism but didn’t inhale.
Florida is pretty wacko, haven't you seen any of the only in Florida news stories?
It seems politics is handed down via family like religion.
I’m a roman catholic because the family is and that’s how I was raised.
I was a democrat because my family is\was (who are now spinning like tops in their graves) and that’s how I was raised.
“Republican” was a word that was not allowed in the house. They were “those people”.
My grandfather worked in city hall for the “real” Mayor Daley.
Those jobs also came with payback. My grandfather was also a precinct captain. He had to get out the vote.
I remember walking with my grandfather as he knocked on doors, listened to concerns and passed out fliers and sample ballots.
The colors were reversed back then. RATs were red and Repubs were blue.
I never got to meet “da mare” but I did meet some big shots when I was a little kid both RATs and Repubs.
I can’t tell you when I had my epiphany.
I voted for the first time, absentee, in 1970. I only received a RAT ballot. (Not sure how that worked) - I never asked my grandmother how I was even registered - maybe I did it all absentee - I don’t remember.
My grandmother was able to get the City of Chicago flag and the State of Illinois flag sent to me after they were raised over City Hall and the State Capitol respectively.
I think my grandmother had more pull than my grandfather.
I don’t remember who I voted for in 72 or 76.
In 72 I was living with my dad and grandmother at the time, and my grandmother got the local RAT to help me out with a couple of Chicago moving traffic tickets so I am guessing I voted Rat. The judge I went before eventually went to jail.
I do remember being blown away by Ronald Reagan. So I am guessing it was in 80 where I went over to the dark side.
(Course, by this time I was married and had my first kid.)
It’s been an interesting journey.
Should have been Floride. Autocorrect turned it into Florida
Yeah, me and my buddy Otto Core Wrecked wuz just funnin’ yuh.
Fluoride...
I’m also a native Californio who escaped ‘paradise’ after my personal Great Epiphany, and return to my core conservative roots.
With the help of people like Rush Limbaugh, Larry Elder, and other talk show hosts, I snuck out under the razor wire of the Democrat mind control plantation and never looked back.
Eventually I made my way to Texas, taking my wife and kids with me. That was almost a dozen years ago, and I still marvel at the wisdom of that choice. It’s turned out to be the best decision I ever made for myself and my family.
No one is born a liberal - quite the contrary, IMHO. It's all indoctrination after the fact.
My formative years were the 60s in Florida. Right off the bat I realized everything the Soviets said were lies, and then I realized everything the Democrats said were lies, too. I became a Republican by default. I worked with the Teen Age Republicans when Nixon ran in 1968.
I can’t say I was conservative, because conservatism had not been defined yet (I even voted for Carter in 1976, the first and last Democrat that ever got my vote). It took Reagan to do that, and it took Rush to articulate it. It defined me. I can say now I’m conservative and still a Republican by default.
You sound a lot like me. Yes, I supported Carter in ‘76, especially after Ford’s idiotic statement that the Soviets didn’t dominate Poland.
