Liberty Hall Museum—which is located on the campus of Kean University, one of New Jersey's largest state schools—has been going through an extensive renovation with the goal of allowing their visitors to walk through every era of American history. Recently, the museum took one massive leap toward that objective in the most unexpected of ways. It was announced that the museum discovered several cases of Madeira wine from 1796 that had been shipped from Portugal for the celebration of John Adams's presidency.

I bet in a 150 years or so someone will find a couple semis full of fireworks that were to celebrate Hilary’s election to POTUS

It’s fortified wine, so it may be OK if the bottle and cork are in good condition.

And it sounds like it was in a wine cellar. That stuff can last for years.

Centuries are made of years. Give the right conditions the wine is as good or better then when made.

Aren't you supposed to give the bottle a 1/2 turn every month, or so?

no the fire works will be shot off but I bet you that there will be a lot of undelivered mail in ballots from trump supporters in states like Washington and Florida discovered in a post office basement.

No, maybe you’re thinking of champagne riddling where bottles are stored inverted and turned regularly to collect sediment in the neck so it can be successfully disgorged before topping off and final corking. Aside from that special pre-release situation, wines are best stored quietly at a very slight slant, exactly as in your picture. At that angle the cork stays wetted but any sediment will settle toward the bottom of the bottle.

Ideally you would turn a red periodically, but as long as the wine was stored so that the liquid remained in contact with the cork (preventing the cork from drying out, as seen in the photo), it could last indefinitely.
