Camping teen awakens to 'crunching sound' as bear bites his head

The attack happened at a Glacier View Ranch campsite. The teen woke up to a "crunching sound."

(CNN)A camp staffer at a Christian summer camp in Colorado received medical care after he was made awake early Sunday by a bear chewing on his head. The 19-year-old said that he thought he was dreaming as he heard a "crunching sound," only to wake up in "immense pain" as the black bear attempted to drag him away from the Glacier View Ranch campsite, Colorado Parks & Wildlife spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill told CNN.

The victim -- who teaches wilderness survival at the camp -- told CNN affiliate KMGH about the ordeal.

"The crunching noise, I guess, was the teeth scraping against the skull as it dug in," the victim said. "It grabbed me... and pulled me. Then it bit the back of my head and (dragged) me," he told KMGH. The animal managed to drag the teenager for about 10 -12 feet before it was scared away by other staff members. "When it was dragging me, that was the slowest part. It felt like it went forever."

My daughter recently returned from a camping trip in Rocky Mountain National Park, not too far from this ranch. Aside from an elk, they saw few “large” animals on the trip.

This is why I don't like tents in bear country. Last time I was camping in the Sierras, a bear woke me up in the middle of the night, digging and snuffling about ten feet away from my tent. Bear or no, I came flying out of that tent like a scalded cat. No way I want one to kill me inside my tent where I'm totally trapped, like a lobster in a lobster trap!

We camped numerous times in Cloudcroft NM. One summer we got to the campground during peak season and it was empty. The previous week a black bear killed a camper in his tent.

We never really worried about it since we always policed the camp, and we had a passel of kids who scared off every bear for miles. The 44 magnum carbine was just for backup.

If the victim fired his fully loaded machine gun, at the bear, then he graduated survival class with full honors.

Did he do that?

Fastest tent exit I ever made was when a skunk got into our tent. Thankfully it left after a few minutes and spared us a spray.

We were there a few years ago staying in Estes Park. We found the spot where you could watch the elk herds at dusk across an enormous meadow. It was pretty cool. Next morning my wife went out for an early walk around our B&B and came across a bull elk and his narem of 6 or 7 cows in the neighborhood, far too close for comfort.

Poor kid in this story. I can’t imagine waking to the crunching sound of your skull in a bear’s mouth. I hate the sounds and vibrations of a dentist working on a tooth!
