It was a family affair on Thursday when a newly sworn-in NYPD officer followed his grandfather, father and uncle's footsteps to become the fourth generation to join the force -- and wear the same shield number.
Officer Ryan Donnellan, 21, was among the 408 people graduating from the Police Academy at Madison Square Garden, the New York Daily News reported. His father, Patrick Donnellan, 52; grandfather, Christopher Donnellan, 90; and uncle, Vincent Donnellan, 51, attended the ceremony to see the fourth generation be sworn in.
Donnellan told the newspaper that he took summer classes at Fordham University so he would be able to join the Police Academy in January 2017. Though he was eager to be part of the force, his father was also proud of him to walk the stage at his college graduation.

"We forced him to walk down that aisle because he was the first person in our family to graduate from college," Patrick Donnellan told the New York Daily News. "We couldnt be more proud of him."

Nice to see
I was surprised at the small class——when my son graduated there were 2000.
.
How does this get to be “fourth generation”? I count three.
I noticed the same thing.
Either the author can’t count or doesn’t know what a generation is.
Perhaps there’s something Appalachian going on in the family tree.
He's a journalist. They're...well...they're "special".
An American hero family. I pray that God will protect this young officer as he will protect us at the same time. Give him safe travels and work Lord. Amen.
His Father Patrick Donellan52
Grandfather Christopher Donellan 90The father and the uncle are obvious brothers and from the same generation
So each generation is able to retire before the next goes to work? Must be nice to be at leisure on the taxpayer dime for so long.
By my count, he’s only the third generation; not the fourth.
His dad and uncle are the second generation.
That is true. Now if there had been a great grandfather who was also a police officer with the same patch number that would be a different story.
Unfortunately nepotism runs the world. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.
Of course, there is nepotism even in that sphere, but those who have really good ideas — and who can figure out how to find customers for them — don't have to worry about who their daddy is or is not. If they persist and work hard, they will find support.

Yup. The only thing that can counter it is the free enterprise system, specifically the entrepreneurship process, in which investors profit from funding the best ideas they can find, regardless of who thinks of them.

And that reminds me of a song that was still being played on the radio when I was 13 or 14:
"I'm My Own Grandpa" (click here)
I see that it has been revived twice, by now.
