Is Serena Williams only as good as the male tennis player ranked 700th in the world? According to tennis veteran John McEnroe, quite possibly yes.
Thats what he said in an interview that aired on Sunday and his assessment sparked some debate online and a stern rebuke from Williams on Twitter where she said his statements are not factually based and that she has never played anyone ranked there.
So, what exactly did McEnroe say to get this kind of response from the top player in womens tennis?
In an interview that aired on Sunday, NPRs Lulu Garcia-Navarro asked McEnroe about his new book, But Seriously, and questioned the way he qualified hsi praise for Williams as the best female player in the world.

And now someone will bring up Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King, I’m sure.........................
I smell a McEnroe promoted tennis match.
There have been a few stories recently about how women could compete in sports against men.
Where are these stories coming from?
Is someone pushing sexual integration of sports, because they are pushing the view that women in sports are inferior, and/or separate but equal???
Does this have anything to do with “transsexual” men who have competed in women’s sports recently, which also blurs the lines of sex specific sporting categories????
I’d like to see Serena play an animal from the zoo.
Maybe she should stop taking testosterone and then have a fair match against women. She is built like a bulldozer, and no where near natural.

Another event dubbed a "Battle of the Sexes" took place during the 1998 Australian Open between Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters.
Venus and Serena Williams had claimed that they could beat any male player ranked outside the world's top 200, so Braasch, then ranked 203rd, challenged them both.
Braasch was described by one journalist as "a man whose training regime centered around a pack of cigarettes and more than a couple bottles of ice cold lager".
The matches took place on court number 12 in Melbourne Park, after Braasch had finished a round of golf and two beers. He first took on Serena and after leading 50, beat her 61. Venus then walked on court and again Braasch was victorious, this time winning 62.
Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance". He added that he had played like someone ranked 600th in order to keep the game "fun".
Braasch said the big difference was that men can chase down shots much easier, and that men put spin on the ball that the women can't handle. The Williams sisters adjusted their claim to beating men outside the top 350.
Ask Two time failed Presidential Candidate Hillary what it was like playing in the Mens leauge
When Chris Evert was ranked near the top, a female interviewer asked her how her husband felt being married to a girl who could beat him in tennis.
Chrissy replied that she could not beat him and that if he really concentrated, she usually would not win a point. I think he was ranked something like 100.
“Maybe Serena should try to play one of the top men’s players just to see what happens. :D “
She might be able t o return a few serves. On the other side of the net, anything she serves up with be launched back at her.
Which one would you suggest?
I knew she would answer that ‘over the net’ serve by John McEnroe. Serena is nothing if not very competitive. She’s clapping back!
Truth is, he’s probably right, but John is talking about the average woman player. I hear Serena and her sister are better than average. Hard to tell the legend from the actual history for me, since I don’t really follow the sport.
Just get rid of all gender categories in sports. Problem solved. Women want equality, let’s give ‘em equality.
Thanks for sharing that. Not surprising at all. :D
Yup.
I guess they want to attract some viewers.
Since the Williams sisters ARE men, he is right. They rule the women’s circuit but would get killed in the men’s. Daddy realized that early on and thus, the switcheroo.
There is NO sex check in tennis (or almost every sport) and daddy knew that going into it.
Soon it won’t matter.
I have a book by Rod Laver or at least used to as I have not seen it in years.
He just flat out stated that Riggs purposely threw the match.
