Op-Ed Happy birthday, iPhone: Ten years later, Steve Jobs' creation owns us
LA Times ^ | June 22, 2017 | By Virginia Heffernan

Apple CEO Steve Jobs holds up an iPhone at the MacWorld Conference in San Francisco on Jan. 9, 2007. (Paul Sakuma / Associated Press)

Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone in January, 2007, before an adoring congregation, in his signature “Sermon on the Mount” style. On June 29, it became available to the public. Ten years later, the phone has spread like Christianity. There are 1 billion iPhones in use, and the device represents “the pinnacle product of all capitalism,” as Brian Merchant argues in his new book, “The One Device: The Secret History of the iPhone.” Merchant calls the adoption of the iPhone — and its adoption of us — a “rapid, civilization-scale transformation.”

Happy birthday, iPhone. Time for a return to its origins.

In the stage show that introduces the phone, Jobs has no doubt he’s making history. The Apple logo is rendered, tall as a man, in what looks like onyx ganache. Jobs stands on the dais, haloed in the logo’s glow. He explains the novelty of touch-screen scrolling. He flashes the album art from Green Day’s “American Idiot.” He plays a good-luck voicemail from Al Gore. He speaks of magic, of revolution.

No iPhones in this house . . . 2 parents + 2 college aged kids.

One of those . . . just because everybody else has one doesn’t mean we have to run out and get one too.

Still haven’t bought one but I got the wife a 5s for Christmas and we really like it. I think I’m holding out for the 8.

Android is better but Apple did popularize the smartphone.

I do not own a Iphone and never even sent a text in my life. When my daughter comes over for a visit I tell her to turn her's off and we'll talk.

My kids bought me an iPad,which I DID NOT WANT,but they got it for me anyway.

I love it.

(They forced Amazon,Netflix, and HULU on me too,and they pay for them.) Sometimes mother does NOT know best.

Without the Iphone there would not have been innovations in smart phones.

Apple set the standard.

And I still use Samsung.

Apple is better but, I am not an Apple guy, which is funny because I knew Jobs and have known Woz for 30 years.

I still have my 486 Dx66 that Woz put a sticker on that read “It Smells Inside”.

I keep it for laughs....

Guy is one funny dork and his assistant is as well....

Android is better but Apple did popularize the smartphone.

No, Android is a poor copy of the iPhone that is far less secure, and no where near as fast as the iPhone, with a clunkier interface, and the only real thing it has going for it is that most models are cheaper. . . but not all.

The iPhone 7 is twice as fast as the best Android phone you can buy — BGR

iPhone Vs Android Security Compared In Light Of Apple-FBI Case — Redmond Pie — Answer, it ain't Android.

It’s an amazing gadget. I use it for many different things... even unusual things like decibel meter and vibration analysis... stroboscopic tachometer... police scanner... ham radio.

Mostly the camera, though. It’s good to always have a decent camera with me.
