Pelton Mail: Curry More Valuable to Golden State Than Durant
ESPN ^ | 6/18 | Kevin Pelton

Ben's tweet was in reply to one of mine about Steve Kerr's post-championship appearance on the Lowe Post earlier this week. Discussing the topic of the best players in the league, Kerr told Lowe, "LeBron's the best player in basketball, and KD [Kevin Durant] is right there with him."

The Warriors are NBA champions for the second time in three seasons. We have you covered with the latest news and analysis from Oakland. Finals »

When Lowe followed up about mentioning Durant and not Stephen Curry, Kerr explained the choice.

"Steph is one of the great players in the world, a two-time MVP, incredibly dominant in terms of the way he impacts a game. But you're talking about Kevin Durant at 6-foot-11 protecting the rim, scoring 35 a game in the Finals and getting to the line, doing whatever he wants to do. There's a different level of impact that is actually possible for Steph and for KD.

"Steph is my size. He's literally exactly my size, so what he's capable of is all based on his amazing skill. But he can't do anything about being 6-foot-3 and 175. In the playoffs especially, when you're having to protect the rim and do so many different things, there has to be a level of physicality that factors in when you're having these conversations about who's the best player in the league.

I wonder if Kerr is downplaying Curry, because of the Warriors owners' contempt for him. Joe Lacob has insulted Curry. Lacob had to apologize to Curry, because after their first championship he said they won because the front office are geniuses, and Curry had little to do with it. I wonder if they will try to resign Curry.

Tyronn Lue seemed most worried about Curry, since he continually double covered him.

Lacob was right though. The front office put together an amazing amount of talent, mostly through the draft, and without tanking for good picks. Curry is amazing, but one amazing player doesn’t win championships.

Oddly enough the front office never has any minutes in the box score

For my money, Steph Curry is more fun to watch than any player in memory. All 6 ft 3 and 175 pounds of him.

I mean really, who wants to see Lebron muscle his way into the basket for yet another slam dunk.

As for K,D, he is really a freak of nature - and I mean that in a nice way, a very nice way. He has skills equal to the the greatest who have ever played this game - and he is one inch shy of 7 feet. There may never be another with his skill set in a frame that size.

KD is more important to that team than SC. That’s not to diminish SC. KD is just the better and more impactful player.

So, my conclusion from the headline is that folks in California will pay more for Indian food than will the folks in semi-rural Oklahoma.

Makes sense to me, but why would a sports station waste its time on the story. Shouldn’t it be on the Food Network?

And he does it all while taking ONLY 4 steps!

I’ve always found these type of discussions amusing. This is a proverbial apples and oranges. the media has been trying to “compare” players in the leagues for years.

You can’t compare a six foot three shooting/point guard with a six foot eleven power forward. They don’t do the same job and don’t hardly use the same skills. They both handle a ball and they both shoot. That’s the extent of it. And the funny thing to me is they also tried to compare Durant to James. James provides the same capacity that Charles Barkley did years ago as point forward. He posts up very little and tries to come from the outside to muscle his way in using the off hand to eliminate defensive players. Durant is a mid to long range shooter with an average of 8.7 rebound per game. James averaged 9.1 rebounds per game but 8.1 of those were defensive so he was not much on the offensive boards. More like a guard and less like a forward.

So trying to compare players in the NBA using different positions and needs for that player, is stupid and nothing more than to fill ESPN and the other sports shows with air time. It means nothing as it would be like comparing a NASCAR to a drag racer.

Not that I really care anymore about the NBA, but...

It is a TEAM game. Both players dominated in their respective positions.

1972 Lakers: Chamberlain or West? How about both?

The NBA is a Racist League. I no longer care to watch racist and help them make the salaries they do not to honor our country.
