VANITY: ISIS, NORTH KOREA, RUSSIA Do We Need To Bring Back the Draft?

Should we bring back the draft?

It's Memorial Day, when most Americans recognized their fallen veterans by staying home from the office, it’s worth taking a moment to consider a perennial question: Should the military draft return? Yes, argued Joseph Epstein in The Atlantic earlier this year. Epstein, a short story writer and former draftee who served in the Army from 1958 to 1960, opposes an all-volunteer force for several reasons: It’s unfair for a tiny percentage of Americans—less than one percent—to shoulder the burden of fighting wars; the American public isn’t knowledgeable enough on foreign policy; the draft could rehabilitate young criminal offenders; and, most of all, a draft would contribute to the “melting pot” that makes America great.

Yes, but this time start with the woman first, because they’ll complain about equal rights if they’re not included in a draft!

It’s always a good idea to give automatic weapons and explosives to people who vehemently resent being forced into service.

Yeah let’s draft a bunch of protesting pajama boys and transsexuals into the military. We’ll never win another war. Boot camp would be fun though.

There is no need for masses of low-skill soldiers in modern warfare. Proponents of the draft, Left or Right, support it for reasons of social engineering, not for military necessity.

“Epstein, a short story writer and former draftee who served in the Army from 1958 to 1960...” In other words, he served 2 years at Fort Campbell peeling potatoes.

I enlisted in 1967, giving up a full ride at a major university in the process. Free societies don’t conscript their armies because that would give the government the power of determining your very future. America’s recruiting numbers tell you that there will always be sufficient numbers of warriors willing to fight and die for the freedom of their fellow citizens. Don’t cheapen their sacrifice by making it mandatory.

No need for a draft, we already have a selective service system that can be used in a crises to supplement our volunteer armed forces.

Yep. I’m an Army Vet. There were MANY along the way that I, too, felt were, ‘plants’ of some sort.

Oh, gawd, could they whine! About anything and everything! And then, they’d get promoted ahead of me! *SMIRK*

P.S. I did fine. Not complaining. ;)

!
Wow some leap there. Maybe they will learn to shoot and respect the weapon. Maybe they’ll shoot at real enemies instead of their neighbors. Maybe they will learn some respect and get them off the street corners and dark allies.

They should have never got rid of the draft.

No involuntary servitude except as punishment for a crime. I know we don’t really go by the constitution, but hey...

Heinlein had the right idea:

NO citizenship whatsoever unless a person PROVES he or she is worthy of it. Make it two years volunteer service in the military. No matter what condition or disability they will HAVE to find you a job. One that must be fulfilled to the very best of a person's ability.

Only then could a person be allowed to vote, hold office, receive student aid, get welfare benefits etc.

And you mention Russia. Do you anticipate American troops having a war on the eastern front?

Why? Since the Revolutionary War, we have never been invaded on our soil. Fact is, it seems we go to war but war is never brought to us. (In 1812 we declared war and drew England in.)

No.
We need to bring back manhood.
Trump with his manly cabinets and improving military, especially “annihilation” Mattis, will make it again popular to be in the service...Obama purposely had no missionary direction, disarray, social experiments, leading to purposeful low moral. We’ll be fine without the draft. Also, more strategy my great leaders instead of pajama boys will make a difference.

When a war comes, there will not be enough time to induct and train people to fight. Putting a draft in now would be suicidal—the outrage would make it impractical.

The days of invasions and massive troop movements are over.

The carnage would be massive, and fast. It will literally be over in days or a week tops—with casualties exceeding all other conflicts.

No, we don’t need a draft. What we need is a government that is clear about what American interests are around the world. And leave the rest for the animals.
