Too bad that couldn’t happen today: Chucky, the Head Clown, would have a black eye or two. Maybe thats what needs to happen: Start beating these RATs with our fists.

No one at the time realized how close the Civil War was and how bloody it was going to be...

Sumner had a biting wit, but he did not deserve the assault that Brooks delivered with a gutta percha cane with a gold head. Brooks also had the assistance of his friend Laurence Keitt, who used a pistol to keep anyone from assisting Sumner.

Sumner never completely recovered.

Brooks was fined $300 (15 ounces of gold at the time).

“Sumner had a biting wit, but he did not deserve the assault that Brooks delivered with a gutta percha cane with a gold head”.

Biting wit? Where in that speech is any humor?

Sumner mocked Butler's speaking ability, which had been affected greatly by a recent stroke:

“[He] touches nothing which he does not disfigure with error, sometimes of principle, sometimes of fact. He cannot open his mouth, but out there flies a blunder.”

Leroy Pope Walker of Alabama was quoted as saying if war did come he could wipe up any blood that was shed with his handkerchief.

I don’t see that quote as mocking Butler’s mechanical speaking ability at all. In context it is possible that that was his intent, but the words themselves indicate nothing except that believed Butler’s view to fundamentally flawed and thus that he could not speak without his words reflecting the error of his beliefs.
