An attempted smash-and-grab was foiled when would-be thieves couldn’t crack a pricey glass at an Apple store at the Avalon in Alpharetta last week.

Few details were available about the suspects except that several men exited a black Dodge Charger and an unknown white car about 2:30 a.m. on May 4, according to the report.

The men got away and made off with nothing, but not before firing three .45-caliber silver bullets into the store’s $30,000 wall window panes, according to a police report. The store manager told police the panes were custom made in Germany.

Police missed the men by a few minutes,

If only they could make the iPhone screens from that glass.

Such glass would sink down in your pants pocket like a baseball made from the purest plutonium.

That would make a good commercial spotlighting the durability of the glass. Of course in a commercial, poetic justice would be observed by showing the bad guys captured, de-hooded and dog bitten at the end. “Remember kids, crime doesn’t pay!!”

The police should check the cell phone tower logs for Obamaphone pings.

What were the punks after? The picture doesn’t show anything close to the window to grab.

Thieves try to smash Apple Store window with sledge hammers in Alpharetta, Georgia, and when that fails, in frustration fire .45 auto slugs into it, which also fails to shatter the window. They flee with nothing of value after ruining a $30k window. — PING!

They both are ion hardened glass, only the iPhone's glass is just nowhere as thick.

incidentally, anything they could have stolen from that store would have been bricked within minutes, and also was already password protected. It would have gained them nothing salable. They could not have accessed them to re-activate them and so the only thing they could do would be strip them for used parts. Not a profitable business model.

Bullet resistant laminated safety glass.

The normal variety of this stuff is two 1/8” pieces of glass that sandwich a clear vinyl.

It’s extremely effective glass for security. In a standard wooden door, a light of this glass that takes up most of the center of the door, as one might see in a business or residency, is very difficult to get through.

Bricks will bounce off of it. Even if you hack through it with an axe, it would take upwards of twenty minutes and a great many strikes to hack a hole big enough to allow passage, especially if the glass is glued in place with something like latex caulk, which is every effective for securing glass to a door, but also makes it difficult to remove for repair.

The bullet resistant high security version of the same is basically impenetrable. I’m not even sure that you could drive a car through it.

What you have there is multiple sandwiches of 1/4” or thicker glass, thicker layers of the clear vinyl and usually one or two pieces of 1/4” or 3/8” Lexan also sandwiched in.

Lexan is unbreakable acrylic. It doesn’t run like glass or plexiglass, and needs to be sawed instead of cut.

So bullets aren’t going to go through that. Certainly not pistol bullets. Sledgehammer - nope.

That is generally what you find between bank customers and the tellers, and I’d bet that this glass was as thick or thicker.

Almost perfect. I want it to lodge in their body, not back into the barrel. Dont want the firearm hurt.

Perhaps they are in debt up to their iBalls and can no longer afford their iFix, so they ended up comitting burglary instead.

Whenever I look at bank cashiers through those thick glass windows, it reminds me of looking at fish in some aquarium. :)
