Fact - both final candidates had plenty of warts. Period.
France essentially had two choices...bad and worse.

The current core problem with the Left is they don’t understand who their enemy is.
The Left _thinks_ their existential enemy is the Right.
The Left fails to understand there is an enemy who _actually_ wants to _kill_ (or at least violently subjugate) them.
The Right just wants the Left to stop taking money that isn’t theirs. Both sides want the other to stop bossing them around. There are _some_ disagreements that just can’t be resolved to satisfaction of the other (abortion, centralized vs voluntary charity), so each makes those no-compromise absolutes.
What the Left doesn’t grasp is that an excessive influx of new cultures _replaces_ our culture (nuances of which Left & Right are bickering over), not assimilates to it. In sufficient concentrated numbers, they don’t negotiate for legislation, they (in fact or in practice) overthrow cultural enforcement and enact their own (FGM, burquas, religious suppression, language, etc).
The Left thinks “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”, thinking the Right is their enemy and that Islam is the enemy of the Right - not realizing that Islam hates the Left even more, tolerating it only because the Left is playing the role of “useful idiot” while the Right is actively opposing the attack. Once empowered, the Left will find itself the sudden & focused target of Islam (capital punishment for LGTBBQ, atheism, abortion, etc), and that the Left’s actual best ally is/was the Right.

Just a matter of time. Glad I saw plenty of France before full-on Sharia sets in.
Even in the mid-to-late 1990s, the jihadis in the no-go neighborhoods were pretty active: Hubby and I dodged two Islamist terrorist scares, and one actual Islamic terrorist (Algerian) bombing - on three separate trips to France.
