CANTON, Ga. - A Cherokee County jury found former cop Shane Ladner guilty on six counts of lying about having a Purple Heart battle medal.
The verdict comes four years after a FOX 5 I-Team investigation poked holes in Shane Ladner's original war wound story.
Ladner was convicted on one count of lying to investigators, and five counts of lying to the county tax commissioner so he could get a tax free license plate for his pickup. The total amount of money he saved was not significant --- about $500 -- but prosecutors say so many veterans urged them four years ago to focus on Ladner because a false Purple Heart claim they say takes away from the real veterans who really did shed blood for our country.

As an honorably discharged veteran in Georgia, I already get a free driver’s license and free license plates, no purple heart needed.
Hmmm...that's interesting.During my Army time (long,long ago) it was my experience that I came across far more Southerners than I thought their numbers in the nation's population would explain.That leads me to suspect that a good percentage of Georgia's male population today (and female for that matter) are honorably discharged veterans.Here in Massachusetts it's hard to find a guy younger than 65 who's served in the Armed Forces and I'll bet the same is true in other "progressive" states.
If it wasn't my hatred of heat and humidity I'd consider moving to Georgia...just for the free plates.
Have you ever visited the north Georgia mountains? You would be surprised at how cooler and less humidity the climate is there.

“An honorably discharged veteran is entitled to a free veteran’s driver’s license if two criteria are met:
Georgia residency and service during a recognized period of war or conflict.”

Even in Democrat infested New York veterans get a free license when they prove their status to have the word veteran put on their license. It is worth noting that originally the Democrats charged $12.00 to provide the new license - they only stopped charging when they were embarrassed by veterans groups.

You're right, I forgot about the "period of war" thing. For me it was Vietnam era, although the only war I fought was the cold one in Berlin.
Also, as I recall, you had to be a resident at time of enlistment or a resident for I think 2 years.
That's true in South Georgia, but here in the foothills of North Georgia, we enjoy long summers and mild winters with relatively low humidity.
As a Yankee, you would be welcomed here, but you would have to register with the county and have an RFID tag implanted so we could keep track of you. ;-)
In NM you must provide a copy of your DD214 and/or DD215 that lists all awards received. Not knowing what GA. requires if anything to claim a PH license plate, I would think some proof is required. Of course you can criminally alter the paperwork, but that opens up a real federal crime can of worms.
