WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Donald Trump is planning to sign an executive order that seeks to make changes to a visa program that brings in high-skilled workers.
Trump is heading Tuesday to Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he plans to sign an order dubbed "Buy American, Hire American," said administration officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity despite the president's frequent criticism of the use of anonymous sources.
The officials said the order, which Trump will sign at the headquarters of tool manufacturer Snap-on Inc., would direct the departments of Homeland Security, Justice, Labor and State to propose new rules to prevent immigration fraud and abuse. Those departments would also be asked to offer changes so that H-1B visas are awarded to the "most-skilled or highest-paid applicants."
The White House said the program is currently undercutting American workers by bringing in cheaper labor and said some tech companies are using it to hire large numbers of workers and drive down wages.

For the entire last generation, American workers have been sold out.
Everywhere.
Both parties. Everyone has been sold out.
FINALLY, someone is saying we need to protect American jobs.
About darned time.
I blame the generation that had everything for this behavior by corporations. it was the decisions made by the baby boomers as they got into management positions that has caused this mess.. 1960s ex hippies a self absorbed generation. and if you look at the universities it is the same self absorbed group that is in charge of the universities that has created the snowflake children.
Also, to be doing it in Ryan’s district while Ryan is working so hard for his constituents on his European vacation.
I guess those who attacked around here last year when one agreed with this, saying we were “naive, not a real capitalist, blah blah...have moved on to browner pastures :)

Bravo. Just wondering, does he ever get tired?
Depress wages?
Hell, I sold cars in Silicon Valley for 18 months.
If H1B is depressing wages I’d like to know how.
I regularly sold to H1B and they make anywhere from $90k-$180 and that is for generic programmers.
My problem is there are plenty of Americans who could do those jobs.
I just don’t see any outreach to American workers or training targeted at them but, it is there and available.
There are city colleges and orivate schools who teach this.
Programmers/Coders aren’t some problem solver within an organization, they are typing in a bunch of commands toward a project objective, which cracks me up.
It’s funny to me becaue it’s just fast typing in another language to build a program that does certain things.
Like here on FR. If want to make a point in formatting characters, sentences, paragraphs, underline, bold, blinking, insert pictures embed youtube, etc I just type the content and backfill the commands .
A coder does it all at the same time because he’s use to doing it all day along. Heck, they even place bookmarksintheircode then dont bother taking it out because it generally doesn’t affect the program.
without the proper coding and commands it just gets ignored and becomes part of bloatware.
Anyway, we could reduce the number of “Mexicons” and hire Mexicans to do coding.
Do you see the Chinese, Pakistani and Indians coming here to mow lawns, do construction, paint etc?
No? Well, there are here and when a company is run by someome from those countries bids a job they can undercut wages but, they also do mot have quality workmanship and use various products that do not match or are inferior.
The cost for labor reflects their inferior workmanship akd usually very few of the workers are certified for any of the skilled trades and much of what they do is guess work.
Compare those companies to one run by Americans and you generally find workers qualified in trades such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical(low or high voltage), tile, etc and as such youbfind higher quality workmanship because learning to perform their trade over the years became something they wanted to be proud of and leave a mark that distinguishes them from the posueres.
Culturally we have way more in common with the peoples of Latin American Countries and they would raise the level of living for themselves and their families back home.
We should outsource to IT companies in Latin America and those jobs would bring more jobs, in those respective countries and so on.
Help our country and hemisphere prosper:
Hire American and Latin American.
The American Renaissance is beginning...
I spent 14 years in Japan working as a skilled worker. They have a very interesting way of seeing that this doesn't happen there. Imported workers must be paid at least 10% more than the going wage for that occupation for someone with similar skill and experience. There are no quotas, just a basic test that they tried to find a local worker who met their requirements. Companies can import as many workers as they want which meets said criteria. For some reason, though, the 10% or more wage and salary premium requirement causes them to limit the number of workers they import.
Why do you suppose that is?
Almost every country on the planet has a comparable requirement except ours.
While I am not opposed to granting H1B visas to expats I think the companies hiring them should have to pay equal wages. This might seem odd to some but it would level the playing field for US workers

This is great news, but we still need to get young Americans to learn employable skills that add value to a company, and get them away from these liberal “studies” programs.
The lottery needed to go...I have said as much many times here on FR. H1Bs should go to the highest paid as a priority. I won the lottery my first time trying but it would have been a loss to the US if someone making a fraction of my income bumped me out of The H1B.
THE BRAIN DRAIN IS LONG SINCE PAST
They seem to be giving out bachelors degrees with cereal box tops these days.
I’ve made a pretty lucrative career out of ‘fixing’ software and computer systems doled out to cheap labor
This is not going far enough. Why not reduce the number of h1b visas? What about the L1 visas? L1 visas are a backdoor entry; all a consulting company needs to do is to open a foreign branch office, hire someone there and bring them over here, to replace Americans on a L1 visa.
How many 70 -74 year olds run these schools?
You sound like a crazy globalist. A citizen of the world type. Screw that.
The work ethics of millennials is legendary....
