If a team feels it is burning too much pitching in an extra inning game, they can always just use a position player to pitch. If you are contending it might be more valuable to preserve your arms for the next series against a division rival than an interleague game. I’m generally surprised more clubs don’t make that choice sooner and just put someone flipping bad knuckleballs in.
