Heads Up Car Displays

Posted on 04/14/2017 1:06:35 PM PDT by Allen In Texas Hill Country

When I can't find the answer.................... My wife's 2008 Mazda shows the gear the automatic is in. My 2016 Kia Soul does not and it bugs me. I've pounded the keys looking for detailed description of what the various HUDs display and none had anything about which gear the tranny is in.

So when all/me is confused I come here. Take a break from the MSM pounding Trump. Has/does anybody looked into or have one of these devices/HUDs? Do they display the gear?

Some do, some don’t. It all depends on how sophisticated the display is. The display available for example on the GMC Yukon that I drove didn’t (as far as I can recall), whereas the one on the Corvette I tested did (along with a LOT of other detail). Probably in general, the more sophisticated or the higher-tier the vehicle is, the more information you’re going to get in the HUD.

My VW Jetta Sportwagen doesn’t tell me what gear the transmission is in either on a full-time basis. But if I shift over to the “self-shift” mode, it will display the gear, and keeps displaying the gear as long as I’m in “self-shift”, but it won’t show the automatic gear on a full-time basis.

Sometimes I shift over to “self-shift” briefly just to see what the automatic is doing.

If you are going forward it’s in drive and backwards it’s in reverse.

I feel your pain. My 170 euro seven speed Panther bicycle displays a number. Would be really annoying if it didn’t.

my 2 cents -

when an EMP strike hits, you’ll all not know what gear you are in.

Get a 60’s era VW and be prepared! ;-)

I’m waiting for the ring sight and target lock functions.

I’ve seen ‘em in Camaros, BMW-M performance models, GMCs, and Ford PUs, so they’re probably in many more models.

A tach would seem more useful, although maybe HUD gear ID would help a bit in mountains.

1. Current speed and speed limit
2. If navigation is on directions and miles to next turn
3. Radio station when you change stations
4. Telephone number or person if you’re calling or receiving a call
5. Crash warning if you don’t put your brakes on when a car is rapidly decelerating in front of you

That’s all I remember. Nothing about what mode you are in.

My 1998 Toyota pickup has a hands-down gear indicator. I just grab the stick shifter on the floor tunnel and feel what gear it’s in.

I like the car with the leaf. The more earth friendly you drive, the more it lights up.

So pretty, and it just swelled my virtue, I thought I would burst.

Is that the Nissan Leaf? Trying to remember.
I just test drove after repair.

A HUD just doesn’t feel right without a targeting pip.

My Jeep only shows where the lever is set. In D it does not display gears 1-6. In manual mode it shows the gear setting but, of course, you’re changing gears manually and the number changes when you do so.

My bad. I was talking about after market devices that plug into the OBD connector under the dash and display the data on the windshield. That are called HUDs too.
